Also, you'd have better structural rigidity if you split the shaft into three and put it back to back it would still flex maybe, but the ribbed triangle design would be far better than the current round shape for shanking..

Wasn't the ICON A5 the one that the marketing was like "It's just like driving a car you can pretty much hop in and fly"? Also was the default aircraft in the doomed Microsoft Flight, that I know for sure.

I think maybe the parachute plus the amphibiousness plus the whole "sport pilot" thing combines to a lot of potential for people to think "I can't crash this thing" and their marketing certainly doesn't help.

I don't know much about planes, so I'm assuming he couldn't pull up fast enough but based on that it sounds like it shouldn't be anywhere without a mile of unobstructed room on every lateral side. Planes can only climb so fast. Exactly how fast depends on the aircraft type, its loading, and atmospheric conditions. You could be getting a mile and a half closer to the mountain every minute but only able to add a few hundred feet to your altitude in that same time. If the canyon is narrow enough you can’t turn and/or you realise the problem too late, you’re hosed. e: Here is a cockpit video of similar situation. The terrain boxes the pilot in but the signs are subtle. It’s not graphic but the pilot does die at the end, so don’t watch too far if you don’t want to. As shown in the video Platystemon linked, small aircraft can have surprisingly limited ability to climb, especially if loaded near the limit. Based on eyewitness reports and the GPS logs the NTSB was able to retrieve it seems like that's exactly what happened. The pilot realized he was screwed, tried to turn around, and didn't make it.

Pilot skill during a climb factors in where most aircraft have a maximum rate of climb and maximum angle of climb that are different. If you are clearing terrain you want angle of climb not rate. Picking the wrong one and/or being sloppy about your speed will both get you killed if you were stupid enough to get yourself in that position in the first place. Low level valley flying is taught but it is not a rating as it is a "You are in trouble and here is how to maximise your chances of survival". Normal low level flying is part of the exam.

For context, the surface of the lake was at elevation 440 ft on the date of the crash.. The ridges on either side of the canyon are approximately seven hundred feet above that. The A5 could probably climb straight up the canyon if you entered with that intention (which would be foolhardy), but you have to start climbing fast. Well now I want some bendy prison pens. I work in criminal justice and next time I'm at the jail I'm gonna see if they have any. Usually I just buy big bags of cheap pens because I lose probably 30-50 a month with clients taking them and me leaving them places.

Okay, they stitched it up, but holy cow that hand must still be totally hosed. I cannot believe they just but the sliced finger bones next to each other and it'll grow back just fine with physical therapy

Bones and soft tissue heal up pretty well, it's stuff like nerves and tendons that have a harder time. He'll probably have little to no sensation, but a significant amount of motor function is very believable. Luckily, pretty much all the muscles that control fingers are located in the forearm, along with their associated motor neurons. So long as you get all the... bits reattached cleanly, the machinery works.

The groom suffered serious injuries to his testicles, thigh and hand and is being treated in hospital. Osman al-Alsaied, 28, was enjoying his last night being single when the weapon was accidentally fired at him rather than into the air. Police say the gun was negligently fired by a 26-year-old man. They say he fled soon after the incident but was later arrested and is now being questioned." It's not unusual to have one shot too many at a bachelor's party but at least they were having a ball.
