Safety and security in prisons currently is cat and mouse like this, and this safety pen will become a weapon in due time.

Also, you'd have better structural rigidity if you split the shaft into three and put it back to back it would still flex maybe, but the ribbed triangle design would be far better than the current round shape for shanking..

Wasn't the ICON A5 the one that the marketing was like "It's just like driving a car you can pretty much hop in and fly"?

They've produced 7 of them. Three of them have crashed. Two of which were piloted by members of the company, one of whom was their chief test pilot.

Though to be fair, the second crash was determined by the NTSB to be pretty much 100% "pilot flew in to the wrong canyon while loving around at low altitude" and this one's shaping up to be "cocky idiot doing stupid things"

Which leads us back to this:

I think maybe the parachute plus the amphibiousness plus the whole "sport pilot" thing combines to a lot of potential for people to think "I can't crash this thing" and their marketing certainly doesn't help.

Also, how tall is the canyon that he couldn't pull up? I don't know much about planes, so I'm assuming he couldn't pull up fast enough but based on that it sounds like it shouldn't be anywhere without a mile of unobstructed room on every lateral side.

Planes can only climb so fast.

Exactly how fast depends on the aircraft type, its loading, and atmospheric conditions.

You could be getting a mile and a half closer to the mountain every minute but only able to add a few hundred feet to your altitude in that same time. If the canyon is narrow enough you can’t turn and/or you realise the problem too late, you’re hosed.

e: Here is a cockpit video of similar situation. The terrain boxes the pilot in but the signs are subtle. It’s not graphic but the pilot does die at the end, so don’t watch too far if you don’t want to.

That should link to the Google Maps 3D view with the coordinates from the NTSB report pinned.

As shown in the video Platystemon linked, small aircraft can have surprisingly limited ability to climb, especially if loaded near the limit. Based on eyewitness reports and the GPS logs the NTSB was able to retrieve it seems like that's exactly what happened. The pilot realized he was screwed, tried to turn around, and didn't make it.

Pilot skill during a climb factors in where most aircraft have a maximum rate of climb and maximum angle of climb that are different. If you are clearing terrain you want angle of climb not rate. Picking the wrong one and/or being sloppy about your speed will both get you killed if you were stupid enough to get yourself in that position in the first place.

Low level valley flying is taught but it is not a rating as it is a "You are in trouble and here is how to maximise your chances of survival". Normal low level flying is part of the exam.

For context, the surface of the lake was at elevation 440 ft on the date of the crash..

The ridges on either side of the canyon are approximately seven hundred feet above that.

The A5 could probably climb straight up the canyon if you entered with that intention (which would be foolhardy), but you have to start climbing fast.

Bones and soft tissue heal up pretty well, it's stuff like nerves and tendons that have a harder time. He'll probably have little to no sensation, but a significant amount of motor function is very believable. Luckily, pretty much all the muscles that control fingers are located in the forearm, along with their associated motor neurons. I'm sure the police have never heard of these things and will totally buy your cries that "but it's just a pen!" and not bust you for possession of burglary tools or assault with a weapon.

You might be joking, but in the beginning of the year Polish Ministry of Defense was to buy tactical pens that:
- have the ability to write under any angle, in temperatures between -37C and 120C
- be made of aviation grade aluminum
- include a glass hammer, knife and a flashlight

Cost - 83k PLN ≈ 23k USD for 1k of these pens. It's good they abandoned this idea...
