Well Jim ain't happy. Just a few weeks after killing visceral, EA has swallowed up Respawn Entertainment. Bye bye to Titanfall, hello to metacritic score determined monetary bonuses for another Star Wars game. Because tying bonuses to metacritic scores is still a thing apparently. EDIT: Holy poo poo, it looks like almost 140 million dollars of the 400 million that EA paid to acquire Respawn will only be disbursed to the company upon achieving those metacritic scores. I think the thing that makes them a more 'valid' target to many is that as has been pointed out by others they want to play both sides of the 'lol it's just jokin around' and 'no but this is actually how I feel about the movie'. Like, McDonalds probably doesn't genuinely think they're fine dining and the top ten channels probably shouldn't try to present themselves as anything but funtimes silly stuff. It's a 'stay in your lane' issue, if Sins didn't constantly have people talk about how this is great insight and their 'sins' didn't constantly reference their own reviews and all it'd be better. Also hey goon, anyone who's nerdy enough to pull a "AAAACTUALLY THE BOOK OF THE WORM IS A GRIMOIRE NOT AN ENCYCLOPEDIA SO THIS IS STILL INCORRECT" is good in my book.

I'm on board for picking apart CS because it makes me unreasonably mad when people are smugly pedantic and WRONG WRONG WRONG so it's very satisfying to hear someone saying as much. I do not feel this justifies the CS crit videos on a wider level, but I am glad that they exist.

I'm not going to say they're, like, never ever exploitative because that would be dumb as gently caress (for example Forza 7's model sounds awful), but the games I've played with them (Overwatch, Shadow of War) have been A-OK in my opinion. in Overwatch's case, the game basically shits them all over you for free (you get 3 per week from arcade modes, plus one on every level-up, plus one for your first victory in a new arcade mode) and the contents don't actually have any bearing on the game. they provide no actual advantage, just neat skins and voice lines and such. in Shadow of War's case, while the lootboxes do contain gameplay-relevant stuff, it's even more generous with the free ones (since you can buy them with in-game currency that the game hands out like loving candy), and everything in lootboxes can be gotten through the core gameplay loop of orc pokemon really easily. the thing about Bibs, though, is that the remaining 10% of his opinions are so unbelievably bizarre and stupid, and his personal life is such a bizarre trainwreck from what goons have seen, that regardless of what he says it inevitably starts an insanely long derail about how he's actually wrong about everything and needs to choke on a hot dog. Bibs could say "the sky is blue" and a goddamned tidal wave of goons would come out of the woodwork to say "ACTUALLY NO IT'S PURPLE" because it's Bibs saying it. essentially, he trolls without trolling. I'm pointing this out because I'm... honestly kind of impressed by it. he's one of the more entertaining trolls I've ever seen on this forum, and frankly BotL could stand to take a few lessons.

It doesn't matter how many freebies you get (casinos keep people playing by giving things away like drinks and tickets to live shows), the fact remains that their contents are randomized. You have zero guarantee that you'll get the skin/voice/etc. that you want. This means that the game is conditioning you to open more and more in hopes of getting what you want. This has a particularly toxic effect on people who can't handle this, and will then spend real money to get whatever cosmetic items they want. It gets worse with games that allow you to straight-up buy advancement in a game, because impatient or frustrated players will feel the push to pay out to get to the next bit of the game. This kind of thing is actively damaging to a game's design, because instead of having these things built into the experience of the game, they're peripheral and able to be purchased at any time. Counterpoint: Actual real life lawyers who actually deal with gambling law say that lootboxes are gambling because (at least in the US) the actual exchange of currency doesn't have anything to do with whether or not something is gambling and Blizzard et al are simply getting away with it because nobody cares enough and they are making enough money to eat the inevitable fines.
