I know I'm late but that Messier contract has got to be a photoshop because he never played for Vancouver and I'll never be convinced otherwise. Way to be made a fool of SAS.

Also Loui Eriksson is back in the line-up tonight so that sure is a thing. A thing that won't score goals but a thing nonetheless.

Mason was Michael Leighton and a 3rd at the deadline. CBJ needed a backup for the playoff push to offset losing Mason, but Leighton never played.

DeBrincat got 2 goals and an assist tonight and Saad finally broke his goal drought. Hawks D is frighteningly bad this year and spending so much time fighting to get back into every single game is not exactly ideal. Also Bouma and Wingels suck and are wasting spots that could go to get some of the prospects some time up with the team instead and Im blaming Q for that.

Also Carolina really doesnt seem as bad as their record implies. Are they just having bad luck so far this season?

DeBrincat has been pretty good this season, even in the games where he's not scored. I don't think the Hawks have really utilized him properly yet, either. He's almost always either playing on the wrong wing or stuck with a bunch of clods (tonight, it was Kero and Bouma...and it's no coincidence that both his goals came on different line combinations). I actually think the Hawks defense has been better in the past couple weeks compared to earlier in the year...but they're still a touch too old or slow on the back end, and when they get beat, they beat badly. I think the fate of that unit this year rests upon Forsling's development. Q likes him and he seems to have inherited the long leash that TvR once held. He has some really tantalizing ability, but he's also liable for a few scary shifts per game where he gets buried in his own end. He's only twenty-one and you expect him to get better, but it's not clear if the team will have the luxury of waiting on him to grow into the top-4 guy they need him to be. Q certainly is testing him as such: he has been getting a lot of even strength time and few hammock shifts, even though his offense is well ahead of his defense.

As for the Hurricanes, I think they're one of the best (if not the best) puck possession teams in the league. That's been the case for the past few years thanks to their awesome (save TvR and Dahlbeck) blue line. But they don't have much top line talent or people who can finish, and Darling (so far) has not put up the numbers for them that he did for the Hawks.

Toronto has now won 3 in a row without Matthews. I'm happy to see Marner starting to get his game together and actually able to make some insane passes. Now if we can just get Nylander back onto his game we should be golden.

Also I think these lines worked a lot better than the pre-Matthews ones. I hope Babcock tries to stick with them.

They've been having bad luck for about 3 seasons now, and they can't even blame bad goaltending this season as Cam Ward has actually been good (Darling not so much). Then again, it's hard to look at their forward corps and feel like they should be scoring much more than they are.

Stretch Marx posted:

Komarov-Kadri-Nylander hasn't worked all that well. Komarov sucks at even strength and would be better off centering the 4th line. I'd like to see Matthews between JVR and Marner since Bozak is still a waste of space even after picking up his game slightly from the start of the season.

I wanted JMFJ around the 6th or 7th round because I felt like I'd remembered him scoring in the shootout at least once. Also:

John Tortorella didn’t see the save of the season in real time. The Blue Jackets coach didn’t witness the overtime stop that produced disbelief among Red Wings fans inside Little Caesars Arena and laughter on the Columbus bench.

Rangers are much deeper and way better. Grabner on the third line is more productive than all but the top 2-3 forwards on the Hurricanes.

Komarov’s officially entered the “funny old man that used to be ok and now they keep him around out of habit” stage of his career and I’m wondering if Babs is gonna ride out this whole year without figuring out he sucks now.

For all the doomsaying about the Leafs not being able to afford Bozak/JVR at the end of this season they’re really proving why it’s not a real issue so far, not because the Leafs can replace their production easily but because they’ve likely peaked.

JVR’s on his way to being a PP specialist and Bozak is just a warm body out there now, it would be a huge mistake to tie up salary in both of them long-term even if the team could afford it.
