I can only see it making things worse.

I'm not saying it would be good for us, just that it would make the world where people are legally allowed to discriminate against us as these bills propose easier to navigate if we know who is going to do so up-front.

I can probably get it maybe but so far the key points are chaplins are free to discriminate and it introduces a grandfathered class of civil servants who are exempt from anti-discrimination legislation.

That's pretty much how I expected a SSM law to go.

So existing civil servants can refuse to register a SSM? Or do you mean existing marriage celebrants can refuse to officiate a SSM?

From the Buzzfeed article:

Smith's bill would continue the current exemption for religious ministers to refuse to solemnise any marriage they want, provide a grandfather clause allowing current civil celebrant to move into a new category that would also have the right to refuse, and allow religious organisations the right to refuse to serve same-sex weddings.

Also, and very importantly, all references to 'man and woman' are changed to 'two people'.

Presumably both? I'm pretty sure that you can't do one but not the other. "Oh yeah, I'll say all the words and stuff, but I ain't signing any documents!"

Existing celebrants, if they wish, can switch over to a slightly different title that gives them a right to refuse to do same-sex marriages. Any new celebrants created after the Bill passes have no recourse to refuse. Likely it'd just become part of the requirements - if you refuse to do them, you can't get registered.

Wait, does it specifically say they can refuse same-sex couples, or any couple that they so choose?

Sounds like this problem can be easily resolved by stripping any legal marriage powers from any religious body and making everyone just rock up to the registry office for 5 minutes of signing forms. Both participant signatories, one witness and one civil servant.

Those who wish to can still have their non legally recognized hoo-ha religious ceremonies in a church afterwards or before if they want.

I mean if you're a religious nut you should just go get loving ordained already and marry people the way the church prefers.

If you're not and you don't want to marry same sex couples then you're just a lovely homophobe, and I'm going to enjoy watching your business dry up after you proudly announce this on your website and marketing material.

Kristina Keneally has a message for the Liberal warriors trying to torpedo her bid for Bennelong by tying her to the corruption of former Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid and his cronies.

"If that's the best you can do, go for your lives," she tells Fairfax Media with a laugh.

"I'm not fussed by it. Go and read the transcripts: they clearly show my actions and my integrity. Geoffrey Watson, the special counsel for ICAC, called me an ICAC hero. If the Liberals think they can make something out of that: knock yourselves out."

Keneally the issue is everyone in NSW saw what happened to Nathan Rees and you took the poisoned chalice. It didn't get any less poisonous with age.

I can't help thinking that the government, the RBA, the big 4 etc know drat well the whole place is set to tumble eventually but are hoping they can hold it off for long enough to de-escalate the situation over time. You can imagine that if the RBA came out with a similar assessment as the article made the dollar would tumble over night and the sharemarket would be wiped out within hours.

All I hope is that it muddles along for a couple more years until I get my CA and some measure of job security.

Edit: also I did some bad math on the 6500ish% increase on 1970s house prices, I think if the inflation rate was the same for income it would mean like a weekly average wage of 15 cents in the 70s. Kids these days are so ungrateful and don't save and struggle and spendthrift like back in the good old days.
