Don't work for them. They'll break you on the wheel and toss you aside. They're not too bad for their members in general, but they employ a churn and burn approach to their own workers. A friend of mine had a UV lead organiser yell at him after working nearly seventy hours for a pittance and tell him if he didn't like it to leave, then justified berating staff with how hard their members have it.

This wasn't a one off busy week either. I used to easily pass 60 hours given night visits and weekend offsite meetings but the NUW would eventually tell you to go home for a few days rest. Shift worker organising is terrible for your brain and body.

I have a friend who works retail and who is in RAFFWU. He also happens to be gay.

I met up with him for the celebrations the other day and he told me how his work had a visit from the SDA a couple of weeks ago, trawling for new members.

He told the first bloke flat out he was having nothing to do with a union which does not support their members and is openly homophobic and to gently caress off.

So, they sent another shoppie around, the senior one out and about that day, to try and pry some membership fees out of him and get him to stop bagging their lovely union to all his coworkers.

Did not go well, I'm very proud to say.

No matter how smarmy a prick you are, you are going to have a very difficult time trying to convince any politically aware person that your union isn't a right wing useless piece of poo poo when he can quote back to you how your lovely union has caused hundreds of thousand of people to end up being paid less that the award. Also how the SDA recently went to court against one of their own members in a pay dispute, siding with the employer! Probably the only union in history.

But the sticking point that got my mate really worked up was, unsurprisingly, when the SDA guy tried to convince him the shoppies were no longer bigots because they had given up openly opposing gay marriage almost a year ago despite the piece of poo poo who runs the union saying "homosexual acts go against the natural moral law" in the same goddamn press release.

So the SDA guy finally left after getting nowhere and no new signups and my mate has made a point to remind everyone at his work how terrible the SDA is.

Had a lot of people chime in at the party with how lovely they consider the SDA to be, so it's good to see the message is really out there and I can only hope they start loving haemorrhaging members. My mate took the opportunity to spread the word about RAFFWU, so they can expect a bunch of new sign ups, too.

All in all, something worth being happy about. gently caress the shoppies and gently caress all bigots.

But, goddamn, how loving deep into the cool aid do you have to be to try and convince an LGBT person to join your openly and virulently homophobic union?

Had he considered change from within?

It's really lovely that we don't have a great hospitality union because we are all scattered among small disparate businesses.

Also I hear from my girlfriend that the Bunnings EBA is either expired, or will be expiring soon (she left the SDA because they are toxic). I believe the SDA are ramping up efforts to try and be more visible and positive within Bunnings (could just be her store). Will be good to see whether the RAFFWU will challenge the SDA on this.

Also can the RAFFWU do posters/flyer drops at universities and poo poo like that? I think that there needs to be more info out there for the younger peeps where it's not "SDA or bust". I think that any positive SDA alternative would be a fantastic way to undermine how the SDA is somehow the default union for retail works.

Well now we've gotten the good part out of the way...When I was a union organiser the problem was too much work for too little resourcing. To effect this structurally there would need to be an increase in Union dues. Given union participation rates have been falling for over fifty years this is not an option. Perhaps unions need to get better at directing funds to internal work rather than the ALP. The soldier of the cause factor will always be present as most of the workers(delegates) are volunteers.

Not only this, but Coles and Woolworths stores are totally dead after 7pm and only run maybe 2 checkouts after that time. Coles even close down the Self Service section because then they have to put someone on to watch it. So they have 2 service staff in the store and a few people stocking shelves.

Opening longer hours isn't going to create a single job - they'll just give those 2 people an extra hour or two a day.

Membership density is the only thing that's going to improve workloads in most unions. We don't donate a whole lot of money to the ALP, but during bargaining rounds we run our DIOs and division secretaries ragged. The problem is if they don't put in those 80 hour weeks, they could find themselves either up on charges for breaching some heinous fair work act regulation; dragged across hot coals by the national exec for loving up a bargaining round; or worse, failing their members which will ultimately result in lower density, smaller budgets, and affect the viability of the union in this state.

It's worse being a national union in WA, because everything costs more, and travel is a loving killer.

Yeah I've been doing this poo poo for ten years. The problem with this is my team used to bring in thousands of cards across a year and the total Vic density would still fall. WA I did well, but I was just reclaiming SDA warehouses for the NUW thanks to some stupid and ancient arrangement that had them caretake WA since the NUW couldn't resource it at the time. This involved me doing truly stupid and potentially dangerous poo poo like driving home from Bairnsdale at 1am to make a meeting at 10am the following day or working 4am meetings through to 11pm meetings just to recruit. Then I'd be doing my own industrial stuff at the office (simply because I can do it myself and it saves an industrial resource, other organisers would be doing mapping and stuff at the same time). I'm not suggesting that this is necessarily bad (I did it gleefully in the main) and my post about Stalinism is a bit of a joke about the "elected" structures of some unions.

I quit my old job despite enjoying it. I had simply burned out and couldn't account for the toll my organising job had on my personal life and frankly on my health. My partner is still with my old union so I still get to see the 24/7 phone calls, have her coming and going all night to attend meetings and generally being completely hosed on a Friday evening. It's a real motherfucker of a job and that is ok, I signed the blood pacts and enjoyed the culture of personal sacrifice. It's more that UV (where this started) take an actively terrible approach to employees and use the Michael Crosby organising approach without criticism, which is horrible for a worker to endure. I will also say without mentioning a union by name (it is multiple unions) that very few people have had their union jobs terminated in accordance with the Fair Work Act.

Jewish councillor shaken after 30 pieces of silver left on desk during public meeting

A TASTELESS publicity stunt aimed at discrediting a Jewish councillor has backfired, as a stoush over Port Phillip’s mayoral election turned nasty.

Cr Dick Gross was visibly shaken after someone from the gallery, understood to be a member of the Greens, left 30 pieces of silver on his desk during Wednesday night’s council meeting.

It came after posts on Greens’ Facebook pages claimed Labor and Liberal-affiliated councillors had teamed up to block Cr Katherine Copsey’s bid for the mayoral position.

The 30 silver coins represents Judas’ betrayal of Jesus which ultimately led to Christ’s death.

And the “pernicious and malicious ploy” has been slammed by Australia’s leading anti-defamation group.

Dvir Abramovich, chairman of the Caulfield-based Anti-Defamation Commission, told the Leader the gesture was a “foundation stone of anti-Semitism”.

“This age-old blood-libel, which has a dark and violent history, has now chillingly resurfaced in the chambers of Port Phillip Council,” he said.

“(Judas) has come to represent the supposed deviousness of the money-grabbing Jew and the Nazis exploited this satanic stereotype in their propaganda, resulting in the extermination of millions.

“Now this grotesque lie has been used in an ugly attempt to smear a Jewish councillor as treacherous, as someone who will set out his peer to the highest bidder for his ill-gotten needs.”

Dr Abramovich called for the Greens councillors and the Mayor to “forcefully condemn” the hurtful stunt.

Cr Gross said he did not want to comment publicly, and referred the Leader to Mayor Bernadene Voss.

Cr Voss said it was “unacceptable” behaviour.

“As Mayor and chair of our council meetings, I condemn this type of childish and disrespectful behaviour towards me or any of my fellow councillors,” she said.
