It's all the people who joined right after the election. If you weren't one of them, you're fine.

Yeah, it's because they're not notifying people of membership expiring. Our chapter started talking about doing phone banking to our local members to get people to renew. Like... what the gently caress? How is even this most basic of things not in place? At this point I don't know why any of this type of stuff surprises me. In other news, tonight our chapter went to a townhall put on by one of our candidates running for governor. We were half the crowd.

There were only 12,000 people that joined the week after the election, weren't there? Also, my wife and I renewed as monthly contributors.

They'll get most of those cats back, and if Jacobin runs a big thing on the candidates that were elected they'll get a lot more.

The actual active organizing, doing stuff, DSA is like 5-7,000 people, but if you're going by that metric most left "orgs" are like a couple hundred people so it doesn't really matter too much, I'm sure the situation will change in 2018 midterms then again drastically as the 2020 election ramps up. I think the key to capitalizing on those time frames is building a framework that will be ready when that surge happens. (DSA will hit 50k in 2018)

I tried to start a socialist student org here at my college but I talked to 4 professors to sponsor it. It's required to have a faculty sponsor. 3 of them were told by their department head it was 'better for them' to stay out if politics. The last one told me he was a staunch republican

SSJ_naruto_2003 posted:I tried to start a socialist student org here at my college but I talked to 4 professors to sponsor it. It's required to have a faculty sponsor. You need to look for a professor who is old, tenured, and Russian, ideally in the physical sciences since they were well treated by the old system. Like, imagine a dude in his 70s or so who may or may not have a bottle of vodka in his desk at all times who waxes poetically about building all his own equipment and grad students these days don't *really* understand physics unless they build their own transmission electron microscope.

Yeah, the key is finding a cranky old tenured scientist who hates the administration and (crucially) not mentioning our intersectional feminist stances until after he signs the paperwork

Oh don't mention grad student unionization until after the paperwork is in, either

If you can, walk by the offices of professors and look at what they have hanging on their doors. I've seen professors put unironic pro-communist quotes on their doors before.

on hold with sex line posted:12,000 member dues lapsed this week. Yikes It seems like they don't send out any kind of reminder when annual memberships are due for renewal? At least, I didn't get anything. Seems like kind of a big oversight. I couldn't remember when I joined so I checked and it was apparently July of last year, meaning I've been lapsed for quite a while now. Fixed that (and went monthly this time), but I bet a lot of people are in a similar position.

My advice would be to form an underground chapter and then take over buildings with sit-ins until they cave and waive the faculty sponsor rule for you. Or until they mace you, drag you out and expel you. Whichever.

the reason it takes weeks to get your membership card is that those packets are put together by one person in DSA’s main office and they do that in addition to a billion other things
