also you can't have a democracy under capitalism lol. the legislation passed by congress has a very long time ago stopped representing popular opinion.

FDR liberals generally embraced the new deal and keynesian economics. This somewhat continued with dissent through truman and LBJ. Neoliberals reject the new deal and believe in the virtue of 'the free market' with religious fervor. Liberals courted workers and the union movement. Neoliberals have abandoned workers and the union movement.

The reason why neoliberalism is the natural outcome of liberalism in a capitalist society is that economic inequality will result in the wealthy corrupting the political process. The wealthy predictably want more for themselves even at the expense of workers and their fellow citizens.

Also neoliberals (and conservative politicians) don't actually believe in the free market. That is just religious tripe that they tell you to justify loving over workers. Neoliberalism heavily supports the government nanny state and government welfare to prop up the wealthy. See: any major bailout, public sector R&D taken over by business, etc.

The worker movement in the US was very violent and bloody. By the 1920s they had been utterly crushed. Workers toiled under a capitalist hellhole of wage slavery.

The New Deal in American politics were drastic pro-worker policy changes and business regulations that were instituted during the great depression in the 30s when FDR was president. Social Security, minimum wage laws, child labor laws, 40 hour work weeks, banking regulations to improve stability, pro-union legislation, etc. were passed. The government created on a temporary basis 10 million public sector jobs when the population was 50 million. The top marginal income tax rate was over 90+%. The pro-worker legislation was passed due to the threat of anti-capitalist revolution and a large workers movement.

This Keynesian spending, regulation, and public sector meddling in the markets (against principles of neoliberals) caused the largest middle class to be created in history and private union membership of 35%. Today that middle class is dying and private union membership is ~6%. You can thank neoliberal ideology and the modern democrats for that.

these phrases are actually all hosed up so i'm gonna go back hundreds of years into the history of these words to get at their roots

Its actually a triumvirate, with the third being the classical liberal:

quote:

what we now call Classical Liberals were people rediscovering Democracy and the Republic in an age of Monarchy, these include people like Adam Smith and Jean-Jaques Rousseau. The western european economy had reached such a state that the commodity was in wide use and the King of England kept his throne by granting a powerful Duke the right to begin a corporate entity that would become the USA, then known as the London Company.

So back in these times it was progressive to be like :saddowns: "hey, i should be able to run a company and the king shouldn't be able to compete with me by using foreign slave labor", and business owners won the day and here we are 300 years later.

So neoliberalism is a reference to a time when capitalism was progressive when compared to an mercantile economy under an autocratic monarch

liberalism, aka 1960s lets be groovyism is a about actual liberty and is a nonsequiter

The new wave of anti-worker democrats taking over the party starting in the 70s and 80s. They called themselves neoliberal until the term took on a derisive meaning due to critiques from the left. Some still proudly self-identify as neoliberal.
https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/05/history-of-neoliberal-meaning/528276/

Thomas frank talks about this ideology in various speeches and in his book "Listen, Liberal!" Although hypocritical in practice, the ideology's premise is rooted in the virtues of the 'free market', meritocracy, and foreign intervention.

Liberal in the current american lexicon is the predominant policies of the democrats. Neoliberal draws a distinction between predominant democratic party policy in the mid 70s to now and what it was from the 30s to the 70s. These policies really took root once Bill Clinton became president. The preferred policies of the democratic politicians is often very different from the preferred policies of the democratic voters.

comedyblissoption

Sanders' public positions on "socialism" is just to return to and expand the FDR New Deal politics which the democrats have long abandoned. Medicare for All (or a similar program) used to be a mainstream democratic party position during the days of Lyndon Johnson. Sanders' policies are why he is the most popular politician in American politics today. Democrats' abandonment of New Deal politics in favor of anti-worker policies is why their popularity is less than trump's.

Today, both Obama and Clinton literally attempted to secretly privatize or cut Social Security with the republicans. The Monica Lewinsky scandal may have saved the nation from the privatization of Social Security.

When I think of unions I think of the guys who recently went to jail in philadelphia for literally beating up people that didn't want to hire them (as well as people from other unions competing for their work). Also those guys who oppose modernization in ports because it'll cost jobs.
