Show owns. Every time Phos gets into trouble the others risk life and limb to bail her out, even though she rarely asks for the help and no one except Diamond seems to like her very much. Diamond likes everyone. Even though Phos is becoming stronger and even more determined she still can't accomplish anything in return. I am extremely into Phos's quest to find someone who will hold her responsible for her mistakes. In her defence, this time was mostly enemy action. But this show's exploration of agency, responsibility, and meaning is really quite neat.

What a powerful and sad episode. Phos and Antarticite literally strained themselves to the breaking point, for nothing. This show is so incredibly good at body horror. Beyond the terror of the gems breaking into pieces, the way the Phos's upper arms and shoulders creak and strain where they mix with the gold, and the way it flows into the cracks, are simultaneously pretty and horrifying. I like that Antarcticite had no problem walking on a broken leg. Turns out the high heels are just training them to still be able to walk when their feet break off. I'm looking forward to next week, some of the shots in the preview look like comedy gold.

More seriously the crying gold was really neat and the kind of organic shapes that it formed were cool. The way the gold moved and the shapes it made also reminded me a lot of the Lunarians, I wonder if there's anything to that.

I hope the anime helps the manga get better translations. Re-translations? Idk. I'm not sure who is doing it now but there was at least a stint where I'm pretty sure it was a guy using google translate lmao. The recent chapters are pretty decent though

a kitten posted:running crying, bleeding gold while leaving shards of yourself behind Yeah holy poo poo that was an incredible metaphor for sweat and tears as bits of yourself shatter and scatter under the sun. And I see how it is, why a tiny population of gem-people are allowed to survive on a tiny outpost on the earth, in the face of an inexorable foe. The Lunarians live outside of time and matter, able to manifest portions of themselves at will. They value the memories and experiences as persons within those gems. So they fight a pointless war with the gem-people to give them a purpose in life, but can at any time come down and snatch up a gem-person and take their accumulated experience up into the other side, where their delectable memories can be consumed by the immortal meta-being that has colonized Lunarian space. This group of gems are not the only ones that have or have ever existed. For billions of years, Sensei has been gathering up the droppings of the Chord Shore, instilling them with its values and love. Sensei is a universal constant, a being of pure benevolence in the face of entropy. But to the Lunarians, Sensei is a Judas goat, or perhaps the shepherd who fattens the flock before slaughter.

I'm fairly convinced that there's something driving the gems to protect each other, even when it doesn't make any sense to do so, or even makes things worse.

Speaking of the official manga translation, it calls this shore the Shore of Nascency, which seems a little more relevant. Not sure why the anime name is so different, unless it's a double-meaning thing. I actually had the impression when watching the anime that the manga had more slice-of-life stuff between the big events, but reading back through that's really not the case. I guess the slow releases of the original fan translations made it seem slower-paced.

Is the reason that the Lunarians usually don't go after Sensei because they are bald, hence not as colorful, shiny, and attractive as the other gems? Also, this episode was pretty hosed. "Oh hey, there's a flesh-colored, slimy-looking torso of a gem person coming out out of the rock. Even though it looks kinda horrifying in its wretchedness, maybe this is the equivalent of a gem baby? Oh gently caress, it just splattered everywhere."

I think they would take Sensei if they could, but considering how powerful Sensei seems to be that looks like it's pretty much impossible. I wonder what Sensei is made of?

Maybe Sensei is an alloy/composite of metals and rocks just like Phos is becoming. Perhaps Phos's new arms and legs being surprisingly powerful isn't actually that unusual, just Sensei is the only other gem person crazy enough to give up on a bunch of memories in order to become able to withstand the full strength of the inclusions. Also the same reason Bort is the strongest normal gem person, because the impurities in the diamond supplement its hardness with much greater tensile strength.
