CommonShore posted:From reddit: What I like about examining older stories is that we can look at history and fables and realize that the past was really hosed up and didn't give women agency even in stories. When we look at folklore tale #69 we realize that forcing a kiss on someone or raping them is horrible so we modify the story to give the woman agency. Then we can have stories like The Fifth Element (bear with me here) that make declarations of love as equal as older folklore tales that used a sleeping woman or rape as the reason for why they lived happily ever after. poo poo changes. We don't look at wars of conquest as the natural order of things anymore so why should we look at folklore and think that we should still be able to make out with someone without their consent. The only people who get bent out of shape about it are salacious dill holes that mutter "Well, I mean there's nothing else to be done hehehhehehehe, I guess I have to RAPE her to dispel the curse!"

No surprise that the Princes are resorting to that sort of thing - they probably have a lot of difficulty finding someone considering they probably smell terrible after loving all those corpses. They just got lucky and found one that was actually not dead.

Bombadilillo posted:Implied consent exists in relationships too anyway. You can walk up behind your wife and kiss the back of her neck and give her a spank. If she's not into it you stop. The people who don't understand consent are ironically really touchy when it comes to their own consent- they often tend to be physically possessive of their stuff (flip out if a roommate borrowed their egg beater even though they cleaned it and put it back afterward) and often pretty drat homophobic as well. I mean if they woke up to a guy kissing and fondling them I'm sure they would panic and freak out so why wouldn't a woman in that situation? Of course the big thing here is that they are unable to connect between the two things or show empathy for others.

I stopped reading before it all apparently went to poo poo plot-wise (the last one I bought was Arabian Nights and Days, which I liked), but I liked Fables the graphic novel series. They had some neat ideas based on the myths in question, even if it sometimes got really weird, like Goldilocks shagging (now full grown) Baby Bear.
