I can see why they chose to use CGI for this show. They're able to model the fluid dynamics and gem shattering really well. I don't think 2D would have the same sort of effect here.

Yeah but I personally feel that there is something to naturally occurring minerals vs just making some when you're collecting. Growing your own gems sounds a little more romantic to me than buying one, maybe that’s just me. I wonder how long it takes to make antarcticite. Which reminds me, given how we see chunks of non-living gems and metals/elements all over the shore, it looks like there’s something special about the process Phos and the others came from...and you can’t just randomly make new gem people.

Given that Sensei referred to the disembodied voices in the floe as sinners, it seems like the oceans are full of the microorganisms that form the Gems. It's only when they are condensed into gem form through some process that they are given life. I'm getting a strong reincarnation vibe here. Maybe only pure souls are able to form gems?
