Pener Kropoopkin posted:everyone who's really into GK Chesterton is a reactionary dork who wishes the pope was their head of state. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Ahlquist quote:Dale Ahlquist (born June 14, 1958, in St. Paul, Minnesota) is an author, public speaker, Evangelical convert to Catholicism, and Catholic apologist. He has written, edited, or contributed to more than fifteen books on G. K. Chesterton, including The Apostle of Common Sense, Common Sense 101: Lessons from G. K. Chesterton, The Complete Thinker, and In Defense of Sanity. Ahlquist is the president and co-founder of the American Chesterton Society and the publisher of its magazine, Gilbert. He is the creator and host of the television series, The Apostle of Common Sense, on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). He is also the co-founder of Chesterton Academy, a Minneapolis-based high school rated one of the top 50 Catholic schools in the United States. Besides obviously having written his own Wikipedia article, Evangelical converts are a huge red flag speaking from past experience. They don't really 'get' the cultural background of Catholicism, they just prefer it's aesthetics/structure to whatever Baptist megachurch they were born into. They come off as nerds who know everything about Papal Minutiae, but they very rarely fit into the community, culturally or socially.

Unless the beliefs are closely linked (ie: Methodist to Lutheran), I think there's always gonna be a cultural gap that can't be filled with belief or learning. I'm sure there are exceptions but for the most part it feels like a kitchsy affectation.

KiteAuraan posted:When did they mellow out? Because in the 16th through 18th centuries they were real fuckos. They were always about regarded their converts as human beings, albeit through the chauvinistic lens of needing to protect the heathens from eternal damnation. Jesuits were generally interested in adopting native languages, sometimes adapting their practices, and being more accepting of things that mainline (usually non-clergy) catholics in Spain would be horrified with and probably enslave/massacre people over. Jesuits being the forefront of catholic colonialism as a whole, they ended up literally everywhere so speaking in generalities is pointless. Nobody speaks of Mexico, Angola, and the Phillippines (for example) as one entity, and same goes for jesuits in each colony. They are also sometimes of a protestant boogeyman, because they were one of the first fronts of Catholic counter-reformation. A lot of their practices to do with working with local languages/traditions/society are responses to the demands of early protestants who felt alienated from a Rome-and-latin-centered church. They were really, really, good at converting people. Slim Jim Pickens has issued a correction as of 00:42 on Dec 3, 2017 |

I’m (((not Catholic))) but have enough Catholic family to feel like y’all are my close-enough cousins. Protestantism scares the crap out of me. The historical legacy of the Catholic Church is plenty full of horrors and evils, I don’t intend to gloss over that fact. But there’s something about being very old that makes Catholicism seem more morally grounded to me compared to American Protestantisms. Like, more value given to education, tradition, philosophy, and good moral conduct. Sola fide, sola scriptura seems kind of bonkers to me, and it doesn’t surprise me that the Evangelical right in America is largely scripturally illiterate and ethically bankrupt.
