Taintrunner posted:the new struggle session is fun if you’re sick of the Disney Star Wars It's really good, though I think Disney nuked the EU not so much because they want control over the narrative, but more because they want to clear the decks for content they get royalties off of. It's almost worth it to purge the dumb poo poo out of the EU cannon tho. I'm glad I wasn't the only one filled with rage by the Force Awakens and bitterly disappointed by the total lack of imagination in the latest generation of Star Wars games .

it took a month or two for me to really resent force awakens. my initial reaction was, well at least it didn't suck. it was ok. the thought that anyone could genuinely think it was good though is insane.

I liked the characters and most of the visuals but it's structurally kind of a clusterfuck, in no small part because JJ has no idea what pacing is.

The rest of it turns into a loving slog though. loving at Leia being Space Hillary Clinton.

There isn't even anything like viscerally weird to hate it for, like how some people view the prequels (the creepy romance subplot, Jar Jar, what-have-you). It's just such a bland Disney-brand product. And expect more of this kind of poo poo when Disney does acquire Fox. They'll throw the X-Men and Fantastic Four back into their rotating line-up of Iron Man sequels and remakes, while making sure we get a new Alien and Predator movie every year!

I mean, Maz Kanata is just the worst character in the entire movie, but also Rey rejecting her calling as a Jedi to the Force is just weird and off-putting.

with the original, the refusal of the call was an effective evocation of the monomyth; in tfa it’s just a mediocre reskin

It wasn't great, but he had a family that cared about him and he was living free. The Empire massacring his aunt and uncle are what pushes him into answering the call. Both of his motivations are relatable. On the other hand, Rey lives as a scavenger exposed to the elements with no loved ones for as long as she can remember. She initially answers the call because she's being attacked by the First Order, but rejects it later for personal reasons that aren't explained at all by the movie because they're cynically concealing her backstory for sequel bait. It loving blows.

Finance capital just isn't that invested into it. It's a purely speculative gamble for morons, child pornographers, and drug dealers. BENGHAZI 2 posted:I mean You can tell the guy's never read Marx or even watched a youtube video explaining what capitalism means, because he does the thing right wing libertarians do where they conflate money and value with capital. He seems to think that everybody switching to bitcoin will somehow devalue the wealth of capitalists, but if that was the case then all of their capital assets will just be revalued in bitcoins instead of dollars. None of the hosts give any pushback on this, and I don't expect Hollywood and video game nerds to know everything about bitcoin or Marxism but come on. It gets much better when they start talking about how sleazy and rapey Hollywood is.

I'm not saying that any of the hosts for sure don't know anything, but that they don't push back at all on their guest who thinks bitcoin is capitalism's silver bullet. Leslie Lee does say that Banshee Chapter is his new favorite horror movie though, which makes all of his other opinions suspect. I watched it because of that episode, and it's a very competently done found footage horror movie - but the ending is bullshit because it doesn't make sense for reasons I'd have to spoil the plot to explain.

Gonna revive a dead thread and recommend Inward Empire. It's far more historically accurate than HH and one episode in particular deals with a general strike that I had no idea about from 1877, which even briefly resulted in a St. Louis commune much like in Paris. Naturally this had the outcome of bringing about the first Red Scare in U.S. history

Since this wasn't mentioned, apparently Redneck Revolt has (had?) a podcast. There's only two episodes and the last one was uploaded in September, so I don't know if they're gonna continue it, but given that they're still fairly active on Twitter/Facebook, it might just be a hiatus. Episode 2 in particular has some interesting stuff about Charlottesville. https://www.redneckrevolt.org/podcast
