comedyblissoption posted:Ok I looked it up and you're right mostly and I'm wrong. They only had 58 for a caucus in the lame duck session for 2010 because they got owned in special elections for 2010 which gave republicans 2 seats. I thought this bill and obamacare happened in the same year, but they happened on two separate years. Your timeline is a little wrong. Both Franken and Arlen voted for the tax cut extensions in 2010 as democrats: In appreciation of this post I will acknowledge that Obama indeed sucks & definitely dropped the ball on slamming through legislation with his brief filibuster-proof majority. They had an opportunity to pass anything for a few months, well, at least as far as Lieberman could be dragged to support something decent.

My biggest beef with Obama tho is his infrequently-covered failure to fill every judicial seat while he had the opportunity.

“Obama did [Republican thing] and still got reélected !” *ignores 2010* *ignores that 2012 was significantly closer than his 2008 victory* Obama’s failures at the start led us to where we are today. Maybe his dumb “compromise as goal, not means” ideology was massively unpopular and he only retained office because people still had enough good will remaining to buy into the “lesser evil” scenario at least once.

And they waited to modify the filibuster to ease federal judiciary confirmations until they had very little time to use it which might have been more Reid's fault but it was dumb.

yah the founding fathers were contemptuous of democracy. they realized the age old problem that if you let the masses have a vote when there is great inequality, then the masses will vote to reduce the inequality. there are two historic solutions to this problem. make society less unequal or simply don't have democracy. the latter solution was chosen.

The real problem with the "Democratic" majority in both houses in 2009 is that it had the Blue Dogs playing pretty much the same role as the Freedom Caucus/whatever the Senate version is, in spoiling things and keeping decorum. If they hadn't kept all those self-defeating supermajority and whatnot provisions in, the Blue Dogs and Republicans would just form a coalition like the IDC and the Republicans in the New York State Senate. The real answer is making goddamn sure that when someone has a (D) by their name it means something beyond "too embarrassed to run as a Republican this year".

The great bulk of the time from 2009-2011 was spent just short of a filibuster-proof majority. Whether they would have done better with more time is up for debate.

Why England Slept is not half bad. I wonder how much of that is native Kennedy talent and how much is the various ghostwriters Ambassadaddy hired for him. Also, it's hilarious that he was basically the Bashar of the Kennedy family; Joseph Jr. was supposed to be next in line to Be Somebody but played war hero too well and died.
