If Amazon Australia ends up being like Amazon Canada then you get to look forward to a bunch of not-really-super-well-priced random items that no one really needs, and granola bars.

I order from Amazon Canada about 1/10th of the number of times that I order from Amazon US.

Except due to the way Amazon changed things in the US ordering from online stores in Australia has been a thing for a while now. Amazon aren't going to be a paradigm shift when we've already shifted.

I've spent many years in eCommerce, including five years with one of the biggest online retailers in Australia (who also have a handful of stores), and this is exactly what I've been saying to my friends. I don't think they're going to fail per se, but they're not going to change the retail climate the way that many have been predicting.

The Australian Greens will move amendments to the government’s foreign donations bill to make sure all charities and not-for-profits in Australia can continue to advocate for policy outcomes, including those that receive international philanthropic donations, Australian Greens senator Rachel Siewert said today.

“There are many charities and not-for-profits that rely on international philanthropy to work on important issues such as saving the Great Barrier Reef, finding new treatments for incurable diseases and fighting Aids and malaria in developing countries. The government’s proposed changes seek to stop charities from doing their good work on humanitarian causes and protecting our environment.

“The far-right of the Liberal party and their mates in the Minerals Council of Australia are ganging up on our charities, trying to limit the ability of community organisations to conduct important advocacy work.

“Fortunately, the ALP and the crossbench supported my motion yesterday that noted the important role of charities and attempts by the government to stifle them. I trust they will support the Australian Greens’ amendments to protect charities.

“Civil society is a key part of a strong and healthy democracy and advocacy is an essential part of the role of civil society.

“In trying to limit the advocacy of charities and not-for-profits, the government is setting a dangerous precedent. The work of charities across the board in different areas should be congratulated, not restricted.”

The Greens will also move an amendment to extend a ban on donations to political parties from domestic industries such as tobacco and gambling, Australian Greens senator Lee Rhiannon said today.

“With this bill, the government has admitted that big money corrupts politics. Whether it’s yuan from Beijing or dollars from Sydney, big money corrupts our democracy.”"

Where do you define Politics? The salvos are trying to deal homelessness, for example, that's a political issue. Every charity in existence could be argued as political in some way.

Everything the tories do is perfectly above board. It's not a code of conduct breach for a trade minister to approve a deal with foreign investors, retire from politics, and days later land $880k PA consulting gig with said foreign investors.

Man you should read up on more of the history most of Australia never talks about. It gets your blood boiling. I didn't know one iota of it until I did some reading as an adult.

I'll get you started: the wage theft topic as it pertains to indigenous Australians. It gets worse as you consider the inter generational impact and lost future opportunities for their families that carries on to this day.

I'm aware of a similar thing happening with several Bunnings stores actually, with several stores not meeting a "growth quota" and cutting back on staff/hours. Whats actually happening is exploitation and abuse of unpaid overtime and an insane jump in employee illness/turnover.

A Brisbane law lecturer who allegedly posed as pop singer Justin Bieber online to solicit explicit images from young children overseas has been committed to stand trial.

Gordon Douglas Chalmers, who used to work at the Queensland University of Technology, is charged with more than 900 child sex offences including possessing child exploitation material and using a carriage service to groom persons under 16.

The 42-year-old was charged in November 2016 but after a thorough examination of his computer, he was charged with hundreds more child sex offences including rape, indecent treatment of children, making child exploitation material and using a carriage service for child pornography.

Police allege Mr Chalmers used multiple online platforms including Facebook and Skype to communicate with his victims.

His alleged offending dates back to at least 2007.

Mr Chalmers was committed to stand trial through the Brisbane Magistrates Court registry.

He is in custody and will face the Brisbane District Court at a date to be fixed.
