Yeah, it's like haven't you ever seen a bird before?

Like check out this completely normal bird I drew seven years ago (have I posted this before?):

I hope this helps you recognize a bird the next time.

don't know if this is the right place for this but there doesn't really seem to be another appropriate place to post this...

I've been working here and there on an idea I came up with a year ago...

It's a digital "pattern" and art website that is dynamically generated with php... essentially the overarching theme is a bunch of interlinked pages that are dynamic canvases in some way.

the actual site is here: http://ajrosales.com/what
there's a project page here too: http://ajrosales.com/what-a-canvas-generator

it's a work in progress...
i could be open to collaboration if anyone was interested in contributing to this.

This is awesome, at first I didn't realize you could click on certain spots in the page to explore. Kind of fun trying to figure out where to click. You could also crosspost it to this thread here, and the making games thread as well.

Thanks! Glad you got a kick out of it. I originally had most of the pages with the "hunt and peck" searching for the link but that turned out to be a problem for the mobile version of the site. Maybe in the future I will figure out an easy way to link pages so that it's not overly difficult to find on touch screens. My goal is to eventually get at least 100 pages to make it more maze-like. Right now there are 55.

Indeed it is, this is awesome and impressive!

Thanks muchly! I hadn't thought of an aural element, but now that you mention it.. it might not be a bad idea. I don't think the focus of it is about sound necessarily, but it could work as an accent (perhaps...) Maybe I'll give it a go on a new page. :)

ajrosales

I think that depends - I have a certain structure set up for the site right now so some ideas would have to fit into that (unless you had programming experience and could develop a different structure that would create dynamic pages).

But, here's a couple of "for instances":
1) create a new pattern or a concept for something graphical that could be displayed (I've used illustrator and photoshop along with some drafting software to create what you see). Each pattern has at least 15, sometimes 30+ images that get displayed in certain random configurations. If you create the images, I can make a new page out of them.
2) code a new dynamic page for a different concept (they all have to be full browser optimized, created with php/css code, and fast loading)

a few things I had considered but not implemented were:
more layered pages with two or three things happening on top of each other
creating code for the pages that is not so random, so that certain images display with a "logic" to how they are assembled. (most of the pages assemble randomly at the moment.)
transparent layering of strange png files that have some sort of "synergy" together
ironic groups of things (kind of like the Trump mouth page I have set up right now)
some sort of strange configuration of text being displayed
more animated graphical pages (but not overly flashy or annoying ones)

obviously, I would like to keep the ideas as abstract as possible, and perhaps strange if possible. to me, the visuals are the most important thing, and I'm hoping to elevate the idea a bit in the future so that I can drown out a few of the pages that are merely repetitious. oh, and nothing lude or revolting. ;)

PM me here if you want, or you can e-mail me from the contact page on my site. (if you e-mail me then please put in the header that this is a "what submission" so I know who you are.

So I'm looking for some honest feedback. I wanted to make a Christmas gift for my mother but I'm poor so doing anything fancy is out of the question. I've spent the past few months working on my drawing and I feel like I've gotten to a point where it doesn't look completely terrible. What I was going to do was print this picture I made for her and put it in a picture frame. I don't wanna give her a picture that looks like trash though, but I'm terrible at judging my art objectively. So I guess I'm asking, do you think this is decent enough to give someone as a gift?

She likes sunflowers so I tried to draw a wintery one. I know its nothing special and it'd be better if I could paint it by hand but I'm too fidgety for that. Its pretty embarrassing to ask this but I dunno where else to get an honest opinion.

I think, objectively, that it looks pretty! Get a nice high quality printing and a matching frame, and I'm sure she'll love it :) Good job!

I would cut out a bit off the top and the left side (see where the last snowflake is on the left bottom? there's a visible "extra" slice with no snowflakes that you can take out) to center the composition on the flower more, maybe add the tiniest slice of background to the right so the leaf is not quite so close to the edge.

If you've got a printer where you can give the paper a bit of a nudge, try printing on nice thick (270g/300g) watercolour paper or even paper meant for oils. It's really a wonder how much more a good, textured paper can add to digital work. If you're getting it printed somewhere, get it done on a canvas (or their version of canvas-like plastic whateveritis they use).

And yes that's good enough to give as a gift, even aside the fact that you spent a lot of time thinking about her and making something specifically for her, which is like the gold currency of giftgiving.
