So for those of you looking to make a Un-Cube, how do you intend to address the variants?

I'm still figuring that out. For Secret Base, it's pretty straightforward, I'll have a full set of each one in the commons, but Very Cryptic Command is another story. I'm considering getting 1 copy of each variant and keeping them separate, then randomly adding one of those to the set of rares to make packs.

I'm running about or I'd crunch the #s on this myself. From a number crunching standpoint do all the variants bring it up to enough for a 360 singleton?

It's 216 before variants. There are not 150 variants.

Print a custom textless very cryptic command, and randomly hand out a copy of VCC to anyone brave enough o draft it.

Might be overdoing it, but I've been considering this bag or similar for my cube:

https://www.fjallraven.com/kanken-no-2

You can tell from the pics it's boxy as gently caress, which is great for holding magic. The zippers go down all the way to the bottom almost, so it should be easy to get cards in and out. I'd just have to find a box to go inside (or build something lightweight).

And then I could get a sweet mana symbol patch to replace the company logo.

I'm using this KMC box thing for cube storage (mine is a 400-ish card cube, so this actually holds all the lands as well). I have an old LowePro DSLR backpack (similar to this) that I use to haul cards around. The adjustable dividers in camera backpacks are perfect for securing deckboxes, etc. Check thrift stores and eBay - you can score a camera bag super cheap.

anyone have any good primers for this year's Holiday Cube? I'm lazy and will probably only draft it 3-4 times and haven't been ravenously consuming twitch this year

It's pretty similar to what we had last year, if you played that one. I'd say stick to an archetype you know pretty well if you can....green ramp, red aggro, UW control, something that's always in every cube.

Avoid Necropotence this time, though.. It used to be game over if you had that and open blue mana (guaranteed hand full of countermagic), but I just laughed and cast new Emrakul last night. My opponent was not happy to discover he can't counter the "when you cast" trigger.

As I type that, I have a Faith's Fetters on the stack targeting Necropotence. One of my all-time favorite cards....it's a trap this year.

I use the exact same box. Cant beat the price. Wish it was just a little bit bigger, but otherwise the perfect size for my ~400,450ish size cube (plus about 20-30 of each basic land; double-sleeved).
If anyone knows of something the same but like 10% bigger, let me know.

So for your cubes, do you double sleeve everything? Or do you perfect fit them and then let everyone sleeve them in their own colors?

I have everything double sleeved, including like 30 of each basic. That way no one has to waste time sleeving and unsleeving (and potentially damaging insanely expensive cards....).

odiv

I just have them single sleeved, but I don't have anything super expensive.

Man, I really need to draft it again. I should try bringing it out on Friday.

Single sleeved, 30 of each basic. With tokens the whole things fits in 2 fat packs.

KaoliniteMilkshake
Jul 9, 2010

Penny sleeved, with 30 basics of each type sleeved up as well I think. The cube is common/uncommon and a budget project, so seeing all the sleeved would’ve cost triple the cube, I went with the cost effective solution.

I have to think all the multiples are intentional, but that's the first thing that sticks out to me. How has the multiple bolts / paths / city of brass worked for you?

have you had a draft where someone goes mono red and gets 3+ bolts? that seems scary as hell

I missed that, there's also three Counterspells and two Cryptics.

I just added in the duplicate paths/counters/etc so I actually haven't playtested that yet. I might have made mono red a little strong but it was super weak before.

I've got a new cube up CubeTutor. Since I'm finishing up my initial burst of tinkering, I'd appreciate any feedback before I start ordering the cards.

The power level is intended to be roughly around a Masters set draft with defined but flexible archetypes across the colors. In other words you should see some signposts to guide your draft, but it shouldn't feel on rails.

Did 3 playtests. Either cut the Storm cards or force them in your playtest drafts because they always wheel in the AI. I don't know if there is enough support nor what your play group can actually do. I'm the most experienced player in my group and I would never try to take storm.

Thanks for the drafts!

Storm cards here are more for value (i.e. getting 6-10 goblins from Empty instead of 12+ as is common in powered cube and constructed) than all-in combo finishers. There are a bunch of mana engines and ways to cast free spells with suspend and rebound. Almost all the pieces can be used in other decks, but it's definitely not a beginner's archetype here.

Here's a sample deck that uses bounce and copying effects to abuse Drake, Sailor of Means and eldrazi spawn makers to build up mana for later or storm count on the big turn.

Just added storm support in my peasant cube since I already ran UR spells matter. That and I had a joke Storm Crow that I swapped for Crow Storm since I don't mind including some uncards (e.g. booster tutor) if they're funny enough and not something super dumb like Stop That. I'm also mostly aiming for value plays (e.g. empty for 6+, grapeshot for 4+). Well that and casting a bunch of spells with Young Pyromancer, Gelectrode, and/or Guttersnipe out seems pretty good.

Assuming you run a traditional goodstuff cube, I’d recommend wtwlf’s top 20 cards for cube articles in the cube articles sub forum on MTGSalvation. He does a write-up for each set, and they’re probably the most convenient way to see a rough list of the strongest cube cards along with some discussion of each.

Here’s the one for Rivals to get you started: https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums...xalan-cards-for

I just discovered the "Classic" tag on CubeTutor, which is awesome since it lets me mark things I literally cannot pimp out aside from getting them altered (e.g. Gilded Drake, Recurring Nightmare). I like it since it lets me do this and filter down to just what's left to upgrade....

59 cards to go, less than a deck! Granted, some stuff that's left is like a $1k judge foil Cradle, but I think I can finally finish it this year.

EDIT: My gf just had the best idea. I'm going to actually gild my Gilded Drake with some gold leaf :science:

Purely on power level, the new one is worse than the original for the most common use of the card (reuseable discard fodder). Casting a 2/1 from the grave or exile isn’t super hot.

He's a recurrable blocker, sword carrier, sac fodder, etc. and can be reused multiple times a turn if you've got mana.

Probably not great in powered cubes but for the rest I imagine he'll do good work.

This poo poo is happening....

This was just my second practice run (adding tape to mask the border better was a huge upgrade from freehanding it). Really the only big flaw was the stupid new frame dipping in at the bottom. This will work way better with old frames.

Then I tried experimenting with more details.....

Text does NOT work. I can't get enough precision.

Goggles and inner frames are fine. I just need magnification to see what I'm doing better (and to eat a snack so my hand is steadier, did this while really hungry).

The lightning came out beautiful though, that's my favorite thing I've done so far :3:

Thread Necro because I love cube and I could use some cube advice.

I have a big old (720 card) powered cube I'm working on and I'd really like to include the signature tribes for each color (so Humans/Merfolk/Goblins/Zombies/Elves + Slivers because one guy I draft with loving loves Slivers and there's a lot of mana fixing in this thing). If I'm using roughly 50 creatures for each color in (+ some limited gold stuff), what is the ideal creature count for each tribe to make it draftable but not overpowered? I was thinking 25, does that sound right? The rest of the cube is somewhat comparable to the Vintage MTGO cube, with reanimator/storm/twin/sneak & show/swords/etc.
