Clearly there are no answers to be had here.

:eng101: Interesting fact about horseshoe crabs: they aren't even crabs! They belong to the arthropod subphylum Chelicerata, which includes arachnids. They're more closely related to spiders than they are to crabs!

They join their spider brethren as honorary crabs in my books

I'd prefer it be recognized that horseshoe crabs are the pineapples of the crab world, having nothing to do with their given name.

That's some sinister poo poo:

quote:

3. Rack & Bleed
Each crab is folded at its hinged carapace, and a stainless steel needle pierces the pericardium to drain the oxygenated blood that's on its way to the heart. About 100 milliliters of blood drains into a sterilized bottle.

:stare:

At least they get released again and don't die.

Some of the blood crabs do die, from the stress or something, but it's rare.

The latest hermit crab I bought was missing a leg. So, naturally, I named him "Legolas"(Leg-loss/Legless :downs:)

He molted recently and has a new leg! It is smaller than it normally is, but probably by his next molt it will be normal size. I wanted to get a picture or video but he burrowed again
