Did any of those people hate Force Awakens and come around on TLJ?

I'd go see it if that was a common enough take, that R2 recording moment was a callback used in a way that didn't sound groanworthy.

mastershakeman posted:

so let's get this straight , the universe between ROTJ and force awakens:
empire is beaten, some big rear end fight over jakku, New Republic is created, all the bad imperial guys retreat to unknown regions

twenty years pass and the new republic has already completely loving failed, the empire is now bigger and badder than ever, and upon their first attack everyone else in the republic (who apparently have no military at all) just flat out surrenders because they liked being under the empire better than under the new republic anyways

nice

In order to have the bad guys still be Space Nazis (a core metaphor and aesthetic), the First Order is essentially the Nazis that fled to Argentina, if they had risen again as quickly as Hitler did after WW1:

quote:

...a successor state to the Old Empire founded by those remnant factions that relocated to space beyond the Outer Rim during the Cold war.

20 years is not too short a time to allow the "allies" to be complacent enough to be open to attack, especially if Senators have New Order collaborators among them.

To make this work, Disney changed the peace agreement entirely. The original peace agreement (no longer canon) was a begrudging evenhanded peace deal between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant so they could benefit from trading again, and eventually resulted in their merger many years later

In contrast, the one Disney replaced it with in 2015 is basically the Treaty of Versailles:

quote:

The conditions of the Concordance required the Empire to remain within the predetermined boundaries set in the Core Worlds and Inner Rim, reducing it to a rump state.[9] It also prohibited the use of torture as well as the recruitment and mobilization of stormtroopers,[2] reducing the Empire's once-vast military through severe disarmament treaties and war reparations.

Ben Solo was born the day it was signed, which makes him the living embodiment of the anger felt by an overly harsh peace accord signed because of "cowards and traitors"

he's basically great Hitler's ghost

That's not endearing for anyone hoping from a break from imitating the old trilogy story beats.

These early breathless twitter reviews are of the sort I would be really hesitant to read anything into. Mostly because I don't think you can read much of anything into them. Really almost not even worth reading, except this tweet right here buried the lead and gave the most information: it imitates ESB to some degree, and that's the most unpleasant thing I could've hoped to hear. Maybe it's only a little like he says, but with all that breathless excitement, not exactly a good source for critical information. Just enough that i'm now very much keeping my expectations in check for this movie.

Still gonna watch star wars but i'm not really hyped on the prospect of of watching pseudo-remakes all the way through. I'd hoped that the most common and loudly heard critical feedback they received from TFA would make them pull away from that concept in a big way.

I don’t buy it. He’s being super evasive about details and keeps trotting out the “It’s a popcorn Disney movie” argument when pressed for them. Luke’s death especially, all these overly-positive twitter reactions would have “amazing, but heartbreaking” or some variation if that were the case. 90% of what he’s leaking either came out earlier this week in the book leaks or could have been inferred from what we already knew.

The starwarsleaks reddit will probably have a confirmed attendee tomorrow or Tuesday who’ll do an AMA.
