I read the story about Batali and it sounds like he’s definitely a gross pig with an alcohol problem, and there’s a mention in there about how bawdy and gross the restaurant industry was in the 90s (I’m sure it’s still probably not great so someone pointing out how bad it was should really mean something), makes me wonder if we’re going to see more stories from about chefs from waitresses (because I’m sure most of the time the waitresses are the ones who take that sort of abuse for so, so many reasons, most of them to do with power imbalances.)

Yeah, the owners of one place I worked treated it like a waitress buffet. They’d have ‘a lineup’ of all the women applying for waitstaff jobs, then ogle than all and hire the prettiest. I was hired as a bartender months before it opened so I didn’t know any of this. Of course I treated it like normal sexist world stuff at the time. I wasn’t offended the way I would be now, or happy to be working with so much ‘talent’, as they called it, the way I would have been were I not already in a relationship... My favorite other story is how the owner would take out $100s from the bar till and vanish with the dishwasher after closing. Oh yeah, Black people were called Canadians as a code and they were deemed non-tipping l. And I got a weird phone message from a regular asking to get his buddy a hookup with one of the waitresses. Christ, telephone tech support was such an upgrade.

I remember watching Mario Batali's Hot Ones episode and thinking at one point, "Man, this guy is a little gross, I wonder if he's done anything," and then I immediately felt bad because I know the whole point about this is that we're not supposed to, like, be profiling random people because of abstract feelings on how gross they are. Then GonSmithe posted those tweets and I had the same thought, not even being able to remember the guy's name so I didn't even pick up on it when exquisite mentioned him, but just remembering that face and having the same feeling of, "God dammit, I'm profiling again! Stop it!" Well...

He detests Flay, so he wouldn't have been depressed about him going down. But Batali was absolutely my first guess and it's not shocking in the slightest. In the book Heat, by Bill Buford, he's painted as a narcissistic, drunken, coke-snorting egomaniac who treats people like absolute poo poo (this is the book in which the tale is recounted of Batali going out partying, then waking up in a hotel room that he didn't recognize, wearing swimming trunks, despite the hotel not having a swimming pool).
