I was my guy's banker though. So I know it does work, but you have to deal with their "processing times" and they limit the amount of transactions you can do per day.

Those days long processing times are for deposits too which makes me think it's at least as much about the banks as it is with the exchanges.

I have found myself just watching the BTC/USD chart on gdax.com the last few days and it is just fascinating. For all the charts that get posted here of wild price swings I feel like those posts could be made every single day. In the last day and a half btc has been as low as $13,500 and as high as $17,000. 25% price swings aren't even newsworthy anymore.

For deposits, exchanges are exposed to the risk that you might buy BTC, transfer it away from them, and then fraudulently reverse/stop the ACH payment.

For withdrawals, it allows them to pay your withdrawal with someone else's deposit so they don't have to go to the bank. All the high-yield money market accounts only permit six transactions a month, and the shortest term treasury bill has a four-week lockup.

Incorrect. Now that I have apparently joined the ranks of the long crypto I can speak with authority that I'm not worried about the wild swings I've encountered in the 27 hours I have been a part of this.

It should be noted that I also was not aware of my position until this morning when I checked the stock thread.

Price is like $12,000 above its 200-day simple moving average, so our hypothetical and hyperrational long-term investor should only care if BTC drops like 70%. We good.

it matters because the market considers those bitcoins to be out of circulation. if they were moved, then that means they can be sold on the market, which means the supply of bitcoins has increased substantially. that would cause the prices to drop.

it would be a significant event

yeah but the contents and activities of your bank account aren't public

no one treats those bitcoins as though they are in circulation because it's a fact that they are not in circulation. if they move, the market will price it in. this is really straightforward

this is true in made-up bitcoin digital goldbug economics, but not in actual economics.

the catch in the case of bitcoin is the thin trading. it literally takes only tens of BTC to cause a major price movement.

there are plenty of whales who could crash the price any time. having another whale come online wouldn't actually change that.

Uranium 235 posted:

it would make the news, but you know that bitcoiners' reaction would be to loudly come up with spurious reasons why THIS IS FINE and the thing they said 5 minutes before was TOTALLY INCORRECT and HOW COULD ANYONE SAY THAT as long as - and this is the key point - they think they can make the number stay up.

The price on exchanges is dictated by like 5% of bitcoins mined. It's estimated that a third of all mined bitcoins are lost (magic numbers, idk the methodology). If those offline-but-not-lost bitcoins came online and sold, prices would go down. It's just how supply and demand works. Market supply would outstrip market demand. Even if the seller was smart and sold over time, or just placed a huge oversized limit sell order, they would depress or cap prices.

My personal hope is that this theoretical person cashes out by selling a bunch of futures while market selling on exchanges at the same time. Instant cashout, and the liquidation would force others to sell in a nice big cascade, too.

Given the repeated history of market-sell flash crashes (there was even a 6% one on Bitfinex last night), I don't believe bitcoin exchanges are sophisticated enough to prohibit orders that damage the market.
