It's never going to be a not-bad book or movie but you're right that it doesn't have to be so goddamn insulting about it.

You lost today, kid. But that doesn't mean you have to like it.

I have a terrible tendency to assume sarcasm, irony, or subtext in lovely works of fiction and not realize until the halfway point that something really is as bad as it appears.

I started rp1 and thought that eventually the main character would realize that all of this poo poo was pointless, culture had become nothing but an endless circlejerk of self-reference, and this awful game contributed to the brutal and environmentally hosed up state of the world through levels of energy consumption that make bitcoin look reasonable.

Instead it ends with the protagonist winning by virtue of memorizing all of the lines to Monty Python the best .
Instead it ends with the protagonist winning by virtue of being really good at pacman. Like, REALLY good, guys .
Instead it ends with the protagonist remembering which computer was THE computer from war games .
Instead it ends with the protagonist's lovely psychoanalysis of a dude's obsession with a lady validating him .

I can't remember the order those went in but each one made me angrier.
