I remember back in 2009, some group of smart IT people wrote a training thing on common online scams and it got sent around as mandatory training for everyone. Our Chief read the PowerPoint full of good advice to the division, and added commentary throughout it that undermined any value that it offered. I remember him spending about 10 minutes talking about how he'd send us to mast if he caught anyone using PayPal because he was under the impression that it was a Payday loan service.

Another 90 feet of chain is connected with a blue detachable link with three white links on both sides. For the fourth shot of anchor chain we will see a red link with four white links on both sides. See the pattern? This red, white and blue pattern continues until we have reached the 12th shot. This is where the pattern stops because we have reached what is called the warning shot. The entire 90 feet of chain on the 12th shot is painted yellow. This is a visual sign that the ship is coming to the end of the chain. The final shot of anchor chain is painted completely red, also known as the Danger shot. Once we have reached the “Danger” shot we are at the end of our chain. All anchor chains in the Navy are connected to the ship by an enormous shackle which is attached to a metal structure called a padeye. The padeye is found in the anchor chain locker. Each of the ship’s two anchor chains is stored in the chain lockers. The chain locker is the space the anchor chains stay until it is needed again."

I think that's basically how the USCG regs have it. There's quite a few videos of merchant ships doing this if you want more. Watching the brake light up is usually the best part. Even when everything is going great there's always a huge rust cloud hanging around and I'm glad I don't have to be anywhere near anchors or lines. It's really only a bad day when you lose the second anchor though.

We just use red and white for marking shots though. Called them shackles too. The funny thing is that chain lockers are terrible rust pits, and always end up with mud and water all over. The big cloud is mostly rust and dried out mud. The markings on the last few shots usually turn illegible after a couple of month.

The issue with that amphib dropping it's anchor wasn't so much that the brake failed, but rather that impatient warrant kept telling them to take more turns off the brake after it was already released. It was impossible for the brakemen to reverse all the turns they had taken off at that point. Almost all of the fault with what happened that day rests squarely on that boatswain's shoulders.

In my experience ballast tanks aren’t usually so much of a problem since the air gets replaced in them whenever you empty them. Much more ventilation on them than in a chain locker, too.

You guys don't inspect engine void spaces? The deck department usually just calls an engineer to do everything anyways. Spent our port stay in Cape Town on the bow drying out the windlass and winch controls and tracing wiring after they left the covers off and dryers off in heavy seas getting there. Still bitter.

Like it does require a number of spins, but only the 4-5 turns they take off at the start. Once the chain starts paying out, the brake is released. Any turns past that are fruitless, and, in this case as MML pointed out, can actually damage the brake mechanism.

You also don’t want to open it too wide so you can “choke” the chain so it doesn’t take up momentum and run away on you. The brake is a metal band that wraps around the drum, the wheel just tightens it up. It’s like an oversized hose clamp.
