The Bitcoin Chief is not teaching the class, there’s a CWO IT teaching it and he’s good. The chief is just chatting during our breaks in the hallway. I got nothing against him.

I remember back in 2009, some group of smart IT people wrote a training thing on common online scams and it got sent around as mandatory training for everyone. Our Chief read the PowerPoint full of good advice to the division, and added commentary throughout it that undermined any value that it offered. I remember him spending about 10 minutes talking about how he'd send us to mast if he caught anyone using PayPal because he was under the impression that it was a Payday loan service.

What do all the “shot on deck” calls mean in that anchor video, and what happened there?

MrMojok posted:What do all the “shot on deck” calls mean in that anchor video, and what happened there? Anchor chains are measured off in 90 foot lengths called shots, so it's marking off how much of the chain has been let out. Each shot has a specially marked link connecting it to the next so you can tell what shot you currently have paying out. In that video that whatever brake mechanism is supposed to regulate the release of the chain failed, and it let it all out at once. Once it all runs out (with a shitload of momentum built up), it rips out from the point where it's attached to the ship (known as the bitter end, which is the origin of that idiom) and the entire chain and anchor gets dumped into the briny deep.

MrMojok posted:What do all the “shot on deck” calls mean in that anchor video, and what happened there? shots of anchor chain, which are loaded onto the ship and then attached to each other with a detachable link, which can be removed to allow the chain to be removed in sections. The "#'d shot on deck" calls is to alert everyone in the foc'sle which shot of anchor chain is on the deck of the foc'sle. Here's a facebook quote which basically lays down how the shots are painted on a USN ship. "LHD class ships have two 40,000 lbs Standard Navy Stockless anchors. These anchors are attached to the ship via the chain. BHR has 13 shots of anchor chain that weighs about 10,000lbs per shot. A shot of anchor chain is measured either in fathoms or feet. Each shot is 15 fathoms or 90 feet long, which for all you mathematical types equals six feet per fathom. The 13 shots of anchor chain are linked by a special link called a detachable link. These detachable links can be removed whenever a shot of chain needs to be separated. The individual shots of chain are identified by color coded detachable links: red, white and blue. A red detachable link with a painted white link of anchor chain on both sides identifies the 1st shot of anchor chain. After 90 feet of chain it is followed by a white detachable link with two white links on both sides; this identifies the 2nd shot. Another 90 feet of chain is connected with a blue detachable link with three white links on both sides. For the fourth shot of anchor chain we will see a red link with four white links on both sides. See the pattern? This red, white and blue pattern continues until we have reached the 12th shot. This is where the pattern stops because we have reached what is called the warning shot. The entire 90 feet of chain on the 12th shot is painted yellow. This is a visual sign that the ship is coming to the end of the chain. The final shot of anchor chain is painted completely red, also known as the Danger shot. Once we have reached the “Danger” shot we are at the end of our chain. All anchor chains in the Navy are connected to the ship by an enormous shackle which is attached to a metal structure called a padeye. The padeye is found in the anchor chain locker. Each of the ship’s two anchor chains is stored in the chain lockers. The chain locker is the space the anchor chains stay until it is needed again."

I think that's basically how the USCG regs have it. There's quite a few videos of merchant ships doing this if you want more. Watching the brake light up is usually the best part. Even when everything is going great there's always a huge rust cloud hanging around and I'm glad I don't have to be anywhere near anchors or lines. It's really only a bad day when you lose the second anchor though.

We just use red and white for marking shots though. Called them shackles too. The funny thing is that chain lockers are terrible rust pits, and always end up with mud and water all over. The big cloud is mostly rust and dried out mud. The markings on the last few shots usually turn illegible after a couple of month.

FrozenVent posted:It's 15 fathoms, shut the gently caress up and go grease something. And 15 fathoms is 90 god drat feet. Also the links themselves are a foot long. The issue with that amphib dropping it's anchor wasn't so much that the brake failed, but rather that impatient warrant kept telling them to take more turns off the brake after it was already released. It was impossible for the brakemen to reverse all the turns they had taken off at that point. Almost all of the fault with what happened that day rests squarely on that boatswain's shoulders.

Now ballast tanks on the other hand...

In my experience ballast tanks aren’t usually so much of a problem since the air gets replaced in them whenever you empty them. Much more ventilation on them than in a chain locker, too.

You guys don't inspect engine void spaces? The deck department usually just calls an engineer to do everything anyways. Spent our port stay in Cape Town on the bow drying out the windlass and winch controls and tracing wiring after they left the covers off and dryers off in heavy seas getting there. Still bitter.

MrMojok posted:Thanks for all the education on the anchor chain and shots! They shouldn’t have taken near as many turns off as they did. Like it does require a number of spins, but only the 4-5 turns they take off at the start. Once the chain starts paying out, the brake is released. Any turns past that are fruitless, and, in this case as MML pointed out, can actually damage the brake mechanism.

You also don’t want to open it too wide so you can “choke” the chain so it doesn’t take up momentum and run away on you. The brake is a metal band that wraps around the drum, the wheel just tightens it up. It’s like an oversized hose clamp.
