vietnam has liberalized slower than china but Doi Moi was still very much a transition to capitalism like China. Laos also liberalized but even slower than China and Vietnam, and it remains overwhelmingly a poor agricultural economy though its finally starting to have some rapid growth

Americans have never had the delusion that Vietnam somehow belongs to us, and our involvement in the war was always framed in geopolitical terms. when I was in Laos I was pretty shocked at how many French people were working there for NGOs, there was nothing comparable in any other postcolonial country ive been in. also a good chunk of people still speak french there, while it was completely abandoned in vietnam and cambodia
