As a grown rear end adult, I tried mariokart again. I was flaberghasted at what I experienced - and I discovered that it parallels modern life so well! Think about this: In Mariokart there are really only three positions you can be in. First place - you just get lots of coins (I.e., money) from the lootboxes and as long as you stay ahead of everyone else it’s the easiest drive you can have. No one is around to mess with you. Last place - Everyone is beating you, but the game (I.e., government) will give you blue shells (I.e., social support and public programming). Very powerful, contextually. Still... it doesn’t practically help you at all and you stay at the bottom. Middle ranks - here’s the real poo poo: it doesn’t matter if you’re 7th or 2nd, everyone wants to get to 1st place and they will take every opportunity to gently caress your day up. The net effect is everyone holds everyone else back. Try playing and being in first place then let yourself fall to 3rd and see with your own eyes. It’s a slaughterhouse. Learn from this. Learn from Mario.

Deep thinker here: you ever think about how video games are a lot like life? You're desperately trying to move forward and beat the games, but in the end you haven't accomplished anything and its all meaningless, so you just start over again and learn how to pretend you didn't hear your mom calling you to come fold the laundry. For more about this see Jean-Paul Sartre.

Other lessons from Mario Kart: - everyone has different starting places but shares a finish line - if you want to get back to things after an accident, it will cost you - money and success are almost totally disconnected - babies can drive cars

The blue shell analogy doesn't fit because there's nothing in reality that the middle/lower classes can do to hurt the top. It would only fit reality if the blue shell propelled the leader forward instead of slowing them down.
