That train that derailed the other day in Seattle was loving moving. Amtrak train was travelling at [50mph] over speed limit before deadly derailment, officials say quote:Bella Dinh-Zarr, a National Transportation Safety Board member, said the event data recorder in the rear locomotive showed the train was traveling at [80mph] in a [30mph] zone when it derailed at 7:34am on Monday (local time). So what, did they get their shiny new fast train but fail to properly inform the drivers where they could and couldn't go fast?

Memento posted:That train that derailed the other day in Seattle was loving moving. That whole section was supposed to be for high speed, was my understanding. One of the issues was no one in authority was willing to do a proper safety assessment since apparently they didn't want to spend any money to address any findings. The local mayors group was pissed and said poo poo going to happen and then what? And then this poo poo happened on the first run of the first day of high speed service. E: I'm willing to bet management told engineers that the whole stretch was high speed and ignored the state track speeds. Proteus Jones fucked around with this message at 23:52 on Dec 19, 2017 |

I don't think that's accurate. Not the entire track was high speed, it was just that now passengers wouldn't be delayed for other cargo going by. Speed limit could well have been 30mph at that location. They have also done trial runs before this so it's not as if they didn't have a proper way to go about it. What the hell the conductor was thinking, I hope we find out.

What the hell the conductor was thinking, I hope we find out. Yeah. I've been reading some more articles on it, and I'm thinking I misunderstood and thought they had said the entire run was high speed (as opposed to just a general high speed line). Probably down to the engineer not paying attention since it seems they didn't have the automatic governors installed/active.

Re: the Amtrak Cascades, I'm having a hard time trying to dig it back up (probably because it's been updated a billion times) but I read an article earlier that said the preceding stretch of track's speed limit was 79 mph, which makes sense since it's a lot more straight. The accident site is definitely in a 30 mph zone (i.e. this is officially confirmed) where the track does a big zig-zag over I-5. So, obviously the conductor failed to slow down in time. I guess what remains to be determined is if it wasn't some sort of mechanical issue, were they unfamiliar with the route, not paying attention, or some combination of both? Throw in some "first-day jitters", too? There's also the fact that the train was about 30 minutes behind schedule at the time. Reminds me of this highly OSHA-worthy accident in Japan. Speaking of firefighting, I'm amazed that we've had a single firefighter die fighting the Thomas fire, and that we've only had a single firefighters die. They had to be really aggressive to keep it from wiping out one city and devastating several others.

I was in Japan for 9 months or so and their trains are legendary to the point there had to be some level of madness for it to happen. There are arcade game that are as realistic as you can get without the actual train. Even the super old machines with 2/1/2 D visuals had standards so tough you don't have to imagine what it felt like.
