This tax bill shows they're finally figuring out how to enact their terrible agenda. If you'd asked me a year ago, I would have said major tax cuts for the rich and Obamacare repeal would have happened by April, so it could have been worse.

But if they do start passing things regularly now, I'm afraid they might actually improve in the polls, even if the things they pass are horribly unpopular. Americans are stupid and will react positively to a legislature that just "gets things done".

Foreign Policy reported that the Special Counsel has obtained “records” that reveal McGahn in late January researched the consequences of lying to the FBI and of violating the Logan Act, a centuries-old federal prohibition on private citizens negotiating with hostile foreign governments. The research, conducted with the help of two aides, prompted McGahn to conclude that Flynn had likely committed a crime by discussing sanctions with a top Russian official during the transition, two current administration officials told Foreign Policy.

Most significantly, the records now in the possession of Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicate McGahn “warned Trump about Flynn’s possible violations” for holding those discussions and lying about them to the FBI

Legal experts told TPM that such advance notification about Flynn’s potentially criminal acts would significantly bolster the case that the President was trying to obstruct justice when he allegedly asked then-FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn the day after his dismissal from the White House. The obstruction statute requires not only that someone tried to impede an investigation, but had corrupt intent in doing so.
, according to Foreign Policy.

...

Top Trump aides including Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer even told the press that the legal department conducted a review after McGahn’s meetings with Yates and found that there was nothing wrong with Flynn’s conduct.

A “senior administration official close to McGahn” told Foreign Policy that the White House Counsel felt unfairly scapegoated by these comments, given that he researched Flynn’s possible legal violations after speaking to Yates and passed his warning on to the President.

Isn't it pocket-vetoed by that point if the bill passes today and they all go home?

If so, and he signs it anyways, wouldn't people be able to sue over it? The GOP could just pass it again but that eats their one free "lets gently caress the country forever" 50 vote threshold for 2018 at the very least.

Assuming the conservatives on the SCOTUS wouldn't just strike down any challenges on some bullshit excuse like the judiciary not being responsible for enforcing Congressional rules that happen to be in the Constitution. Or that the GOP never actually recess Congress any more because they're loving scum.

I believe that Democrats refuse to let the Senate formally adjourn (and the motion is filibusterable) so that Trump can't recess appoint anyone.

Nope. They get one shot per year at passing something with 50 votes via reconciliation in the Senate. Everything else will have the Democrats filibustering it unless their demands are met.

Maybe, but I don't necessarily know about that. What they're doing is horrifically unpopular, and they don't seem to give a poo poo about being held accountable for what they're doing. If they bungle this CR as they look like they will, and continue not funding CHIP, they're going to suffer for it; even if they manage to get some things passed.

Employer mandate still exists and medicaid for all isn't a pipe dream on the coattails of a blue wave.

And this was the Republican shot at reconciliation for 2018. What are they supposed to do after this legislatively?

They were gonna pass something at some point, it's not like the end of the year was the cutoff.

All things considered there are far worse timelines.

Essentially, it could always be better, it could always be worse. What matters is what happens going forward. Even if nothing matters in a universal sense, things very, very much matter here and now in our society and country.
