I'm relieved by the incompetence of the house GOP, because I'm pretty sure even weeks of plotting on their behalf won't result in anything effectual.

This tax bill shows they're finally figuring out how to enact their terrible agenda. If you'd asked me a year ago, I would have said major tax cuts for the rich and Obamacare repeal would have happened by April, so it could have been worse.

But if they do start passing things regularly now, I'm afraid they might actually improve in the polls, even if the things they pass are horribly unpopular. Americans are stupid and will react positively to a legislature that just "gets things done".

The tax bill is literally the only thing they can pass with 50 votes until late 2018 at the earliest and that's if they steal the incoming Congress' first reconciliation bill.

Hold your horses.

If they do that (they will) and the Senate Democrats, assuming they have a majority, don't just abolish the filibuster immediately upon starting the new session (they wouldn't), then they truly are just the loving worst (they are).

Would they'd be stealing anything? They'd be doing a lame duck reconciliation, but it would still be 2018. The next Congress gets 2019.

Yeah, and Jones just lowered their threshold for success. Admittedly, the GOP has become a lot more obedient recently, but there's still a chance Murkowski and Collins realize how much power they have collectively now. And Rand Paul still exists, although his beneficial stubbornness may have been beaten out of him.

Republicans were always evil, and they were always going to ride "both sides" to power eventually. There's a chance we can turn the 2018 Senate Red Tide that was to be into a wash and rebuild our presence at the state level. Nothing to be done but organize and make the bastards pay for this long and hard for the rest of our voting lives.

I do still have some hope that this particular iteration will die. They have ten months, they'd have to be remarkably incompetent to waste this reconciliation bill entirely, but if nothing else the more they delay the more it'll become an election issue (and the grumpier their donors will be :toot: ).

We don't need normal decorum, but we also shouldn't make the mistake of assuming the Republicans have the right idea either.

We need a new decorum, where it is allowed to say vagina when regulating women's health and it is ok to call out a Republican senator for being a racist on the senate floor.

No. Hell no.

Any politician who stands on "decorum", "moral high ground", "political capital" and all that phony horseshit is showing themselves to be more concerned with the appearance of the office and not what they're loving in that office to do.

Basically, even if they're on a side that doesn't want to gently caress over poor people, minorities, and the like, them subscribing to such idiocy suggests they'll be a useless fat rear end in a chair rather than someone agitating for their constituents benefit and the country's benefit.
