Think of it similar to the different realms of Norse mythology, separate planes of existence connected by magical means (the Realmgates).

Y'know, I read one of the Masters of the Universe comics Dan Abnett co-wrote and at one point Skeletor started rambling about alternate dimensions and I started getting serious AoS vibes.

What I'm saying is that Malign Portents is gonna reveal the Saturday Morning AoS Cartoon dimension.

Haha, ok. I had the impression AOS took place in the Warp / Realms of Magic, with Mortal Realms being ... something outside of that.

Nah, the mortal realms are just the collective names for the different dimensions based on the Winds of Magic. Lexicanum's been making a big push to update their Age of Sigmar stuff recently and has a page on it now.

Based on the latest Malign Portents video, if we're lucky, pirate skeletons with flying ghost ships would be right on point.

This would have cleared up a lot of confusion for AoS - if GW had launched it saying "All of this is taking place in the Warp," it would have been so much easier to understand.

But yeah, it's like the Norse mythology. There are eight realms (worlds) and each have their own distinct vibe based on the color of magic they are associated with. The Realm of Chaos is a separate realm, outside the other eight Mortal Realms. All are connected via Realm Gates and somehow, Skaven have figured out how to "gnaw" through reality, creating tunnels between the realms.

Question about Sylvaneth - When you work Sylvaneth Wyldwoods into your list, does it work like summoning another unit?

Meaning, if I took this list:

Freespirits
Spirit of Durthu
Kurnoth Hunters x 3

Heartwood Wargrove
Treelord
Branchwych
- Acorn of the Ages, Verdant Blessing
Dryads x 30

Scenery
Sylvaneth Wyldwoods x 2

- I would need to have 80 points set aside to be able to set those woods up, either through Acorn of the Ages or Verdant Blessing, correct?

Got a game in the other day - 1500 points, my Empire dudes vs. my buddy's Beastclaw Raiders. The mission was from the new General's Handbook, where you got a point every turn for objectives held, plus a bonus point if you flipped an enemy objective. As my army is very slow, it was basically up to me to table my opponent. While he only had two models left at the bottom of turn 5, I couldn't hack it and he took it away 15-7.

Stray observations:
- Beastclaw Raiders are fast and they don't like to die
- Knights of Order are absofuckinglutely useless and are only okay at not dying immediately
- Handgunners, especially when backed up with Hold the Line and screening units, are monstrous. I don't think anything else in my army killed anything, they just wiped out upwards of 500 points a turn
- Since Gunmasters don't grant rerolls to cannons anymore, my Greatcannon never hits a drat thing
- State Troops do a pretty good job at tying things up, especially with the Warlord Trait on my general that makes them autopass morale
- I need a wizard to cast Mystic Shield on some of my state troops, they'd do an even better job at tarpitting that way

I saw a pretty brutal list the other day where some dude took 3 celestial hurricanums with Sylvaneth. I should really look into building a grand alliance soup list.

I think this was retconned into "Big, but not infinite just not totally explored".

Basically as much space as the writers want.

Still seems meaningless. Same goes with the cities: like you know they're there, but you don't know where there is and what importance do they have in the infinite conflict.

If you’re not reading some of the Realmgate Wars books, you really should. It fleshes out a lot of this stuff. And the meaning comes from humanity across the various realms desperately trying to cling on against the forces of Chaos, praying that Sigmar will protect them. The cities are actually a step forward, and often to protect a realmgate or help cement an alliance between realms.

There’s a lot of hammer and sword porn in the books (which I like) and there’s some stuff which is clearly instructions to the author to try to sell Skinks or a Chaos Dreadhold (which sometimes is really bad and others times makes you go “gently caress I gotta have it”), but there’s a lot of good ideas there, and some enjoyable reading there and you can take those ideas and run with them.

Not saying it matters is like not saying anything in 40K matters because the galaxy is so huge. The meaning comes from the conflict of the characters and their journeys, or what happens in this little section. The realms being big is a good idea - means you can set something in the realm of Beasts and not worry about what the books do if you so desire.

Some posters characterise it as Masters of the Universe, and that’s not a bad first approximation and there is a bit of that sense of high fantasy going on. Think the artwork more than the cartoons.

Worst 40K writing also has sense of bloated scale. Anything related to Beast Rises, Guard casualties or some fluff where you a badguys explodes a planet. Eyes just glaze over.

But it's nothing new, sci-fi writers are poo poo at understanding scale.

Fans are even worse. War of Sigmar recently featured a new fan made alt-Horus Heresy setting, with its main selling point being that their heresy was bigger and larger.

It's actually in the rules for the Cannon for Ironweld Arsenal. It gets rerolls if an engineer is nearby, and the gun master is one. Might want to try that warscroll out instead next time, that cannon can be brutal.

I've played against that kind of Freeguild army a lot. Handgunners are amazing and the infantry are all great on the defense, but I think it really needs something that can cover ground to catch objectives. Maybe Demigryph Knights but they seem probably bad.

Ooh, yeah, the Dwarf cannon rules are what I needed.

Demigryph Knights look pretty good to me, they're Free Peoples (Knights of Order aren't) so I can give them Hold the Line for that +1 hit/wound.

There's an AoS tourney coming up and I'm thinking of attending with my Empire mans. How's this look for a list?

Leaders
Freeguild General (100)
- General
- Command Trait : Indomitable
- Pistol & Sigmarite Weapon
- Artefact : Relic Blade
Gunmaster (80)
- Allies
Battlemage (100)
- Allies
Units
30 x Freeguild Handgunners (300)
30 x Freeguild Guard (240) (spears and shields)
20 x Freeguild Guard (160) (swords and shields)
20 x Freeguild Crossbowmen (200)
5 x Freeguild Pistoliers (130)
War Machines
Cannon (180)
- Allies
Total: 1490 /1500
Allies: 360 / 400
Leaders: 3/6 Battlelines: 4 (3+) Behemoths: 0/4 Artillery: 1/4
Wounds: 129

I'm planning on using the Free Peoples allegiance bonuses and having a big ol' block of dudes holding ground while my general does Hold the Line every turn. The wizard will either Mystic Shield or Wildform a unit every round to make my shooting even stronger or my blocks of troops even tougher. The Pistoliers are in there because I have the models and they'd be the quickest way to fill out my remaining points while still giving me a cheap harassment/objective grabbing unit.

It looks solid for 1500 points. Freeguild allegiance and a big block of hangunners make it so hard for anyone except the beefiest monsters to charge you if you position them right. The key will be knowing when to hold your ground and when to push the block forward.

Do you have any greatswords? they're expensive but great at murdering things in combat, maybe look into them if you go up to 2k points.
