The acting was good, there was some actual drama, and it was occasionally funny, so this more or less checks out relative to the franchise.

It's not even top 3.

OT reigns supreme. I did like it better than the PT though, even if PT had some better ideas (but worse execution). It's on par with rogue one. In fact it's similar in its blandness and how its too afraid to follow through on its themes.
TFA, of course, is dead last. I'd even put Holiday special ahead of that garbage.

You know. There didn't need to be a scene in the movie even. Just an extra paragraph in the opening crawl would have been fine.

Another amusing anecdote: my group is now running with the alternate character interpretation that BB-8 is a psycho murderbot like hk-47 But no one realizes it because they can't hear the inflections in beep language.

This improves the already pretty good TLJ significantly.

Edit: I mean the opening crawl of TFA not TLJ because complaints about how the FO came to be are really about that movie not so much this one.

I like phasma a lot more in this movie than TFA, that's for sure. Yeah she got dunked on anticlimactically by Finn but unlike her mentor boba fett she got a moment of being a real threat first.

I feel like they could be using Gwendoline Christie a lot better than they have. They could even build Phasma as some kind of credible threat by hanging around with Kylo. But she's probably gonna return in the next part just to get clowned again.

Holdo is a boring poo poo one-off character who the movie sets you up to dislike and distrust, only to pull a "gotcha" that validated her and made the casino arc completely pointless. This is the worst way to do a "twist" in movies imo.

If they follow the action hero fantasy themes they havn't used it, there needs to be a slave rebellion lead by Finn. Phasma comes back and her getting killed again will solidify the rebellion.

I think Johnson made a pretty good movie but I think it’s unfortunate that he had to start in the middle of this trilogy. Excited to see what he delivers with a clean slate and with new characters that nobody has attachments to. I was hyped when they announced his involvement because I’ve been keeping my eye on him since Brick and I know he’s got some more great movies in him. I still believe he’s the best man for the job going forward.

Yeah, I agree with this. I hope the reaction to this movie doesnt make them overly wary of what he wants to do, or even that the reaction doesnt make him do that to himself.

I know that TLJ was all about killing our stupid nerd theories, but Finn leading a stormtrooper rebellion in EP9 was always my dumb nerd theory. Now that he's killed Phasma, maybe they can work that into the mythology of Finn.

So, talking about Snoke. I didn't like Snoke in TFA, wasn't impressed by him at all, he's goofy looking and has a stupid name. All the fan theories about his origin just came across as totally idiotic, and I'm quite happy to learn he was just a prop to set things up and can now be discarded.

However.

TLJ does make his background seem a lot more important, yet refuses to elaborate. Not who he is or where he came from, that's irrelevant. But he is now very important to Kylo and Luke's stories, and it does seem like there's a gap there.

Snoke influenced Kylo towards the Dark Side. Was he specifically targeting Ben, or was Ben just more easily swayed than Luke's other students? That's relevant backstory. Does he even know it was Snoke who was influencing him? That seems kind of relevant. When did they meet, and how did Snoke convince Ben to team up with him and the First Order, instead of heading off and starting his own little empire with his own followers? Again, that's important for understanding why Kylo has only now turned on him.

And then there's Luke. Luke knows Snoke was influencing Kylo, but never acted against him. This... doesn't ring true to me. Alright, he feels guilt over his own role in Ben's fall – but shouldn't he be down right furious that some new Sith was force-molesting his nephew? Did Luke think Snoke was too powerful to confront? Why? When?

And these are all plot points that TLJ itself raised, not left-over mysteries from TFA. The Emperor could be more of a cypher because the old trilogy wasn't Vader's story to the same degree as this one is Kylo's. As it is, it feels like the lack of detail about Snoke is leaving gaps in a main character's motivations and characterisation, and I can see why people think something's missing here.

This is actually one of the best thought out and well-intended critiques I've read yet in this thread. You're absolutely right. It makes the whole Luke-Kylo dynamic feel empty to a certain degree. Much left to be desired.

And before someone tells me to check out the new EU stuff that will explain it all, just go gently caress yourself because I'm not reading some companion bullshit. If it isn't in the films, it's dead to me.

I didn't like Episode VII because it was basically a New Hope with new characters. For that reason I like this movie immsenly better. The only thing that I wish was there was something different about the huge Empire/First Order vs the resistance/rebels. The resistance beat the Empire, I don't understand why they didn't try to make things a bit different with the imbalance in power between the two sides. Could have been way more interesting I think if it was a true war like Clone Wars.

Also, lol at all the fan fiction about Snoke

* I was really young -- probably 6 or so -- when I watched the OT, and ESB was scary and dark, so I didn't really like it at first. And ROTJ was awesome because the good guy wins in the end and Ewoks were cute af.

The only constant is that AOTC was pure garbage, made of poo poo and piss.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Rogue One. For enjoyment, I'd put it just behind TLJ, for quality I'd put it just in front of TLJ.

Attack of the Clones was poo poo because it failed technically, the story was a bunch of meandering bullshit that no one cares about, and it wasn't even fun to watch. And that diner... that loving diner...

ROTS was also extremely flawed, but at least the story seemed to have a point and it wasn't a complete abortion in terms of execution.

For me, the best part about the Mr. Plinkett review of TPM (aside from the fact that it was goddamn hilarious) was that TPM was the best of the prequels in terms of execution and story. And it still gets absolutely shredded in the most humorous way possible.

edit: his reviews of AOTC and ROTS weren't as spectacular imo, even considering the increase in production value
