War in the East is on sale for $24. Should I pick it up? Will I regret it if I don't?

Is DC:B a better version of WitE?

That's a good price for WitE. Both are great games. Part of the allure of WitE is if you play it long enough to watch your troops totally swap roles in different seasons and years. The game plays totally differently in January 1944 than it does in August 1941. DC:B has the decision system and it's totally unique and a lot of fun. On the downside you've only got Barbarossa.

WitE

  • A tighter scale.
  • More focus on the technical side of things.
  • Focus on historical outcomes within a strictly strategic realm.
  • A decent list of scenarios.
  • 1941-1945

DC : B

  • A broader scale without quite as much unit detail.
  • Brings in an entirely unique factional system. By the end of the campaign it's likely everyone will hate you.
  • Has a special card system to allow some interesting actions.
  • Just Barbarossa

Man, I'm reading Ian Toll's Pacific war trilogy, so I've been on a huge Pacific kick lately. Are there any good grog Pacific games that are a little lighter in scale than WitP? As much as I've tried - and am a lifelong fanboi of the Eastern front - WitE's mechanics have never really clicked for me and I fear WitP would fall into the same category. Does something like a WitP Lite exist?

I guess it's not that groggy really but I like Order of Battle

History shows, again and again, how nature points out the folly of man.
Order of Battle is basically a rejiggered Panzer Corps, but it's probably the best Pacific Theater strategy game you'll get outside of uber-groggy stuff like WitP or broken insane messes like Pacific Storm. What I really want to see is an expansion for the new Strategic Command that covers the Asia-Pacific Theater, like the old SC series eventually did (with mixed success).

I'm looking for an example of a "good" grog manual. Or even any detailed game with a well laid out, easy to use, manual. I can think of lots of not good ones, especially for board games, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a really awesome one.

If board games count then I think all GMT manuals are really good. Both for explaining the game and for use as a reference when you're not quite fully remembering a rule.

They're all available on their (hilariously groggy) website, too.

ASL has a Pacific module. Not sure how accessible it is, but the basic rules are fairly easy to grasp, imo.

I've got a bunch, and yes, some are great. GMT writes a very precise manual, though not always eye candy.

You could get WiTP but just play the smaller scenarios, where you don't have to worry about production, oil, pilot training etc

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. It's got an interesting sales model... free demo into which near limitless DLC plug. I guess that's okay as it'll allow me to pick and choose what campaigns I want to play with. Reviews are mixed on steam. Any good feedback for a guy who was kinda lost in the finer nuances of WitE?

Most definitely. It's not a normal kind of sub sim, it's more hands on in the control of the sub and more hands off on every other aspect. Feels significantly more satisfying that way IMHO, though your mileage may vary. Significantly improved with each patch too, with plenty of post launch support scheduled.

My haul so far this sale has been:

* Silent Hunter bundle (third time I've bought these games)
* Sudden Strike bundle
* AGEOD Civil War 2
* Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa
* Decisive Campaigns Case Blue

It's regrettable that the Command Ops games aren't on sale.

I'm still on the fence about:

* Strategic Command WW2
* Another AGEOD game, either Alea Jacta Est or To End All Wars
* Afghanistan '11

Afghanistan 11 is a pretty decent game. If you liked Vietnam 65, they improved on the formula.

If you don't have Vietnam 65 and think you might like these games, it's a little less than 5 bucks. I'd give that a try and see if you like the logistics management gameplay. These games are mostly logistics at the end of the day, since you have to keep everyone supplied if they're not in a base. The FOBs themselves need supply too.

This is currently what's scratching my aforementioned PacWar itch. You're probably aware, but if you run any mods on it, you'll need to make it large address aware. There's an app that I found thru the subsim forum that makes it a literal 3-step process: select executable, check LAA box, save. The Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate mod is also pretty great. I've been running that and, though still in beta, it strikes a good balance between fun and realism. I used the Trigger Maru and Real Fleet Boat mods for a few years and they both made the enemy escort AI bipolar. They either frittered off to shangri-la after a torpedo attack, or they detected my submerged, silent, and stationary submarine at 12000 yards and pulverized me.

FotRSU - because we don't have enough acronyms here already - does a pretty good job at making the escorts feel realistic. Also, it includes a copy of the LAA app I mentioned above.

Whether or not it's worth $40 to you is going to depend a lot on how much you want a good tactical game vs. how much you want a deep campaign. The campaign is not deep. It's there, it works, and it functions to provide a connected framework for missions, but that's it. Aside from that the game is ridiculously good and getting solid post-release support.

WITP has already been worth $30 just in the smaller scenarios. I'm a week into the Dec 7 scenario as the Allies and have some decisions to make.

Are the PI defendable? I'm pulling as may ships out as possible to Surabaya, then to Australia or Ceylon. Unfortunately the AOs were jumped on the way but most TFs have survived.

There's a large auto convoy full of CW troops going to Singapore. I'd drop them in Rangoon instead but the port is too shallow. Letting them go to Singapore feels like sending them to a POW camp, there has to be somewhere else in the DEI or Burma for them.

My plan is to build up Pago Pago, Suva, and Noumea as bases to defend the trade route to Aus. Everything north of that line feels totally vulnerable.
