I really hope whatever ends up being BF 2018 ends up having viable bolt action rifles without scopes. Nothing is more satisfying than out sniping people using scopes while using iron sights and being able to do well close range (albeit with heavy usage of the frommer). I'm sick of assault rifles and poo poo, gimme lebels and k98s all day.

I'm beginning to think I'm never going to bring down a plane using an LMG. The only non-puzzle weapons I still have to unlock are the cutlass, the scoped Farquhar (just a few more headshots baby), and that bloody low weight Parabellum MG. I'm at the stage now where for the trophy and the codex kills I'm instead hunting supports and checking out the weapon they dropped just in case they were running with it. Seems more reasonable than trying to pound away at planes and doing a handful of points' worth of damage before they fly out of range. I've tried all the LMGs, and no joy. Yeah I know getting any shots on the aircraft helps, especially to stop them repairing, but goddamnit getting the kill shot requires an already battered plane and a bunch of luck.

With the mixed maps playlist continuing to be great, I had a little think about what I'd like there to be done with this game I've put over 200 hours into the MP (plus 100% in the campaign and a few extra replays just for funsies). It's a surprisingly small list tbh.

----Make all the tanker/pilot gun unlocks available to all classes. It seems daft to restrict them to crew who should mostly never need to use them, all being well. Keep them as primary slot weapons if need be, that C93 silenced pistol is pissweak but fun, an assault running with it instead of a Hellriegel will not break the game.

----Let sponson gunners have a third person view. A landship driver can look in 3P, shoot, repair, reload. Their gunner gets a tiny window on the world and a limited arc of traversal. People would stick around to use the guns more if they could at least look around for threats.

----Shuffle the elite kits. Why does it always have to be flamethrower inside Fao's fortress and tank hunter up at the D flag? Why always the infiltrator on Achi Baba? It could be randomly assigned at the start of each battle, or changed up each week like the medals or battlepack revisions. But having a trench raider on Amiens? Or a tank hunter on Monte Grappa? Villa Perosa on Argonne? Infiltrator on Sinai? The opportunites to get something different and unique to spice things are endless. Also, put more spawn points for the elite kits on the map so there isn't the urge to just camp the crates waiting for them. (I'm guilty of this only on Achi Baba as I want the codex entry then I can let go.) Maybe some kits might not be the best suited certain situations, but this is a game where you might end up with a battleship on your side, and then the person driving it might sit back at the edge of the map rendering most of its weapons useless, so eh gimmie all the toys on all the maps.

----Add a "bail out" perk as a service assignment. If your plane or tank gets sploded you automatically jump out rather than get blown up with it. I've just had too many vehicles brew up with no chance to GTFO first and when it was a final bit of chip damage to a wing of a bomber I just spawned into I feel using one of my three perks to get a mulligan on those outlier situations might not be a bad thing.

----Expand the mixed maps playlist to more modes (this is almost certainly coming anyway)

----Air Supremacy mode. Doesn't even need specific maps, just designate a bombing target at each end of an existing map (behemoths would be excellent for this) and have a bunch of fighters and attack planes escort them in while also fending off the other team doing the same. 5 bombers, 5 attack planes, and a dozen fighters per side. Or give one side a behemoth and defensive fighter cover, while the other side has bombers/attack planes and fighter escort. I am turgid at the thought of 20 fighters dogfighting around a zeppelin, or waves of torpedo bombers desperately trying to make it through to a dreadnought steaming around. gently caress it, just take chapters 2 and 4 of the Friends in High Places war story and make it a fully multiplayer battle. [masturbates furiously]

It took me a few days dedicated to shoot down planes (not fun at all, but the reward LMG is worth it). My advice is to play Monte Grappa 24/7, sit at the spawn on the AA gun, if you see an enemy plane, shoot it a bunch of times then exit the AA and use your LMG. MG15 supressive with its 200 round box is more than recommended. At some points pilots will get pissed at your AA game and will fly more towards you, in a straight line, making it easier to shoot them down.

That unlock is awful, boring and takes you out of the game completely. If you aren't going to play support a lot, don't bother with it. If you are a 80% support, 20% medic like me, you'll end using the MG14 wich is drat nice for its RoF for mowing down streets.

I don't even like the standard version which I already have. Feels weak and boy it has a lot of recoil on it. I just want:

one kill with it so I have 100% trophy completion up to DLC pack 2.
ten kills with it so I get the codex entry (my personal BF1 endgame)

I'd like to have it there in the weapon list instead of a padlock and a % number, but I can live with ticking off these two milestones at least. I kinda respect what they were going for, encouraging people to shoot at planes and all, but making it "score 500 pts of damage against planes with an LMG" would have been better, at least all this (failed) attempts would eventually add up to something worthwhile.

Guillermus
Dec 28, 2009

I gree with you. Making it "deal XXX amount of damage to planes" would have been better. I'm a bit spergy when it comes to unlocks and having stuff to do on the scout class sometimes bothers me, but then I remember that I don't have any fun playing scout so I just ignore the class completely.

The MG14 is far from weak but has lots of recoil. It's best used always with the bipod and in maps like Amiens or even Suez. Streets and maps with a bunch of chokepoints as the with rate of fire will tear anyone tring to go towards you like no other LMG can as the closest belt fed or with high ammo cappacity shoots 200 rpm less (MG15). Still is far from my most used guns wich are the BAR Storm (great run&gun), Huot low weight (I threat it like an AR), Lewis suppressive for more campy style.

I wish you could earn skins by doing something. This game is tame as far as loot box cash grabbing goes these days but the random skins in random crates that change every week just kills any enthusiasm I have for skins which is a shame because I think the skins themselves are really well done in this game.

The mastery system from BF4 would have been great here if it gave you a legendary skin instead of a dog tag.

Achi Baba is probably my favorite DLC map so far. It's the perfect kind of intense, plenty of cover, and best of all: infantry only. My first match was intense as hell and I still ended up like 38 and 6. I was surprised because my playstyle almost entirely depends on map knowledge and predicting the flow of people. That's why I almost exclusively play base maps, because I know every nook and cranny of those maps and the idea of learning a new one is annoying. Fort Vaux is closest to that style but is particularly infantry rifle unfriendly so I don't like playing it.

The M1917MG owns and it has the same damage model as the Benet-Mercie (23-19), It's gonna own more when the weapon balance patch hits public servers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpu53l9Pvac

The telescopic version is great due to the lowest ADS spread (not moving) of all LMGs and with this one you can even gently caress up snipers (2nd to last clip is me killing a group of three scouts).

This one really takes time to overheat and I'm trying to kick out the habit of reloading often because it's not needed at all really. This one and the Perino are my favourite bullet spammers so far.

For medic guns the Federov is the new hotness, it's basically an assault rifle. The Farquar-Hill is easy to unlock and a lot of fun too. The RSC only holds 6 rounds but is a two hit kill at any range, I like the optical variant.

E: for other classes etc... the Nagant revolver is trash, the Obrez pistol is great and tons of fun. For assault the Ribeyrolles is a viable alternative to the Hellriegel for a ranged weapon, and the Machinepistole is awesomely badass up close. For scouts the Lebel is brilliant (but slow reload), the Vitelli and Carcano are garbage, the Nagant and Arisaka are fine. Supports, the Peroni is great and has a nice partial reload, the new M1917 MG is very similar but has improved sustained fire. The Parabellum *low weight* is a game changer, I finally got to use one after picking it up off a corpse and I really REALLY want it. But you have to shoot down two planes with LMGs so... yeah.

There are CTE videos of the upcoming Heligoland Bight map and while it's a long way off this map, unlike the awesome looking Zebrugge Raid, is going to need a lot of work. Checked 4 different YouTube vids and all of them were some degree of "...yeah, this is far from finished". Problem right now is it's very open fighting on the beaches around a large circular cliff (that is out of bounds on top) so infantry is getting battered by vehicles. It's in a good concept, poor execution stage right now but I kinda dig how they broke this DLC into two stages so they could focus on getting the maps right two at a time rather than rush things. Plenty of time to lick this into shape.

I'm hoping they make it so it's more than 1 destroyer per team. Would make some cool naval battles when the dreadnaught comes out (I would cry if the airship was the behemoth for some DICE reason)

From what I saw it's dreadnaught behemoth, defo one L-class destroyer per side, and torpedo boats for days. The torp boats are kinda deadly because 4 torps takes down the small destroyer and the bow cannon can mash up infantry on those exposed beaches. Planes are also wicked powerful, but the rocket AA gun is back in the CTE so no idea how those various things will play out.

Oh and the L-class can also lay a whole string of mines (controlled by the captain, removing the 4th crew slot) but comments say this is already in at Cape Helles. Dunno if that is true, but the rush to grab the destroyer means I've never had time to even think about looking for a weapon variant on the spawn screen. I don't think it'd even be worth it on Cape Helles even if it is there, but might be worth grabbing it once to piss about with.

let you get a vehicle first and then select which variant you want. it's so annoying having a tank slot open up and by the time you change your choice from a tank hunter to close support or whatever, someone else has spawned in and taken it.

Huh?

As long as you are highlighting a vehicle, it is reserved for you. I've spent several minutes deciding which vehicle variant I want, and it certainly does not let anyone else take the vehicle from you.

Not sure that applies to the destroyer but it absolutely does to planes/tanks/etc.

The game has been out for over a year at this point. The DLC isn't all out but generally DLC doesn't take a year and a half to get fully released. It's on a slow schedule due to the fact that no battlefield game came out on 2017 and won't until fall of 2018.
