While I'm all :wtc: towards the assholes who tried pinning them murdering Wakaba (because let's face it, that's probably what happened) on Futaba...it also seems kind of contrived, I guess? I mean, that's Wakaba's funeral so we can assume her relatives and close friends attended it, including Sojiro (I forgot if it's mentioned, but is Sojiro supposed to be Wakaba's boyfriend?). It just seems really silly that not one of them even tried stopping or punching the assholes for even daring to read a suicide letter blaming the dead person's daughter to her own face.

For all we know, her mom might not have any friends other than Sojiro. And Futaba's alive relatives could be few and those few can be terrible people.

Maybe they liked Wakaba and hated Futaba.

Maybe they hated Wakaba and bullied her kid.

Again, I'm also guessing that no one wanted to make a bigger scene since it was at a funeral. More realistically, the memory we're seeing may still be a little fractured or not even complete. The part where Wakaba's family has these assholes escorted from the premises was probably not in Futaba's memory, because the reading its self is where all her guilt is linked to. She probably didn't see that part or remember it because she was in shock and shut down at that point. All we have to go on are the words that caused her pain and we're not seeing the rest of the scene at this point, assuming we ever will.

Futaba’s Persona is the loving Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire from the stories of HP Lovecraft, as represented by... a UFO.

Actually, the Necronomicon was never explicitly called a grimoire, tome or book in Lovecraft's own works, but called one in later writers additions to his cosmology.. it was an Unknowable Forbidden Object. That's why using it can drive the unprepared insane, it's an item of unknown lore and power mortal minds shouldn't try and understand.

Which is why her persona is a UFO, it's a thing people don't know the true form of, but has unimaginable forbidden powers in it.

Lovecraft gives quotes from it and it lives in Miskatonic University's library.

By "lives" I mean "is contained in", not in the organic sense.

Like I'm legitimately not sure where you're getting the idea it's a living creature or mysterious object.

On one hand, I'm kinda glad that they're not using Nyarly for the main games.
On the other hand, considering Phil is still around (he was the save points in 4 for heaven's sake) they really ought to remember about N in the spinoffs and offgames.

These are fair points. I just find it a bit hard to believe that Sojiro would have just stood there and let the black-suited assholes read even a couple words of that hosed up letter without interrupting them with a well-deserved punch. Maybe it's like what you said, Sojiro could still have done that but Futaba was still too traumatized to notice people had defended her.

I don't think Sojiro was around for the funeral or rather, he surely was around but not as a family member. Remember, he is neither Wakaba's husband nor Futaba's biological father.
On the other hand, I totally can see the MiBs reading the fake suicide note during the ceremony.

As for P4 arena: yeah, I had forgotten about that but the first Arena absolutely hinted at Nyarly before Ultimax came along and said nope. Maybe they'll remember he exists in Etrian Persona 2, but I'm doubtful. Which casts are we getting for that one, all of them or only 4 & 5?

Is there a wiki or something that outlines all this sort of stuff, like who/what Igor is and Phil/Nyarly? I've only played P3, 4, and now 5 but I'd be curious about the overarching story.

I do not recommend visiting the Megami Tensei wiki if you haven't played this game because there are P5 spoilers everywhere. That said, I've chosen an excerpt from it that I feel explains Philemon and Nyarlathotep decently:

quote:

Philemon lives within the realm of the consciousness and unconsciousness of all souls and he awakens within people the ability to use Personas. He cannot directly interfere, however, the party is aided by the Velvet Room, which is filled with his servants. Philemon is conducting an experiment with Nyarlathotep to see if humans can become enlightened beings, rising above their nature, or if they will completely and utterly destroy themselves. The war between the two is revealed to be essentially a bet between the two meant to probe Humanity's heart to wonder what lies inside: whether Nyarlathotep's ultimate triumph, or Philemon's.

Philemon is the blue butterfly seen in the intro movie of 3, the save points in 4, and at a few points in the beginning of 5. Nyarlathotep is likewise represented by a black butterfly, but can take the form of anyone he chooses and directly intervene, unlike Philemon. Nyarlathotep was introduced as a character's Persona, but was revealed to have engineered the entire plot of Persona 1.

As for Igor, he first appeared along two characters named Nameless and Belladonna, all servants of Philemon (though from 3 onward these other characters don't appear and he never mentions Philemon again). We know enough about him to get by from this game: he helps those chosen by Philemon (though more recently it's been limited to "wild cards," aka those with the Fool Arcana) as the proprietor of the Velvet Room, where he facilitates Persona fusion.

All this is secondhand, though. I've only played a bit of Persona 2 (Innocent Sin), and none of Persona 1 because that game's bad!

Yeah I kind of doubt Philemon and Nyarlathotep will ever be a huge part of this series again because they're tied to a lot of continuity bullshit related to games no one really played and also it's possible some of those games don't even take place in the same universe as this one, it's really complicated.

(sidenote: there are two Persona 2 games, named Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment)

They're not very relevant to the Persona games from 3 onwards. As far as I can tell if you want to connect 3 and onwards with 1 and 2, what happened is that after the war between Philemon (~the embodiment of Mankind's hope - this does not mean Phil is not an absolute dick) and Nyarlathotep (the embodiment of mankind's negative emotions) almost blew up the world in 1, actually blew up the world in Innocent Sin, basically forcing an universe reboot, and almost blew up the world a-loving-gain in Eternal Punishment the two actually established a truce heavily limiting their direct involvement in matters so as to not blow up the world again.

As Arist said, one of Philemon's favorite forms is that of a blue butterfly (the save points in 4, Joker is going to see him at the start of 5), while Nyarly is sir Not Even Cameoing In The Last Three Games.
The Wild Card is generally considered to be Philemon's blessing, because in 1 and 2 all party members could switch Personas around (with restrictions); Phil is also Igor's boss, although Igor's role can be exhaustively summed up with: he fuses Personas.

My opinion on the rest of the world: there are Persona plots happening in the rest of the world, we don't see them because Atlus is a Japanese company and thus not interested in writing those games.

E: Atlus has clearly decided that the Persona games have no metaplot and so any connections are just cameos. I'd call it a wise stance.

Thank gooness we all get along so well!
Don't forget that, in Persona Q, there's a blue butterfly shown as being trapped in a spider's web, and it escapes at the end of the game. It's never alluded to by any of the characters, so the only reasons for it being there are 1) fanservice, or 2) a hint for Philemon's return. Given that Q2 was recently announced, it's my opinion that he might be related to the plot of that game.

Oh, and speaking of Q2, we still haven't got any information on it other than that it will be somehow related to this game.

Neat. Sweet. Petite.

All the Megaten games, last I looked up are very, very loosely connect - with the idea that Raidou Kuzunoha I is the split point where they divide in Persona-Universe and 'Main Megaten' Universe, but otherwise Atlus purposely keeps any connections that aren't direct sequels/prequels deliberately vague.

The Persona continuity is fairly straightforward when compared to the overall Megaten universe. There are two hiccups though: whether or not SMT if... counts as a Persona game (people say that it laid the groundwork for the Persona series, but don't say if it is a Persona game), and the Kuzunoha thing in Persona 2. But other than that it's fairly self-contained.
