If they go with the latter (which they probably will), how long it takes the uncensored version to become available depends on when and where it's broadcast. Might be a couple days after the censored broadcast, might be a week. Might be when they start releasing the Blu-rays in Japan and the various fansubbing groups start ripping the footage. As far as the kind of violence it shows, my general impression of Japanese television standards is that huge gouts of gore are okay but they get tetchy about organs and grey matter spilling out everywhere. GK will make for an interesting test case re: the skinning of faces and/or entire bodies.

I don't mind losing gore that much, I'm hoping they improve on the big problem with the art: backgrounds that are rely so much on photo references that they become completely dull and inexpressive.

There a particular background/photo reference you've got in mind? Because it's not something that ever stood out to me before (other than giving Captain Skinhead all the Hitler-based emote macros). For all its strengths Golden Kamui isn't super experimental in its art style. A lot (most?) of the backgrounds are snowy forests. When it gets turned into an anime I expect the backgrounds will continue to be... snowy forests, but maybe matching the character art more closely?

Well, basically any background or landscape in the series is over-referenced. Just look at this ugly mess: I think there's even 3d modelling used at times. The characters look floaty and out of place in any establishing shot.  The over-referencing has the result that while the characters are all very expressive and unique, the backgrounds are at best bland and worst eye-searing.

Is Kamuy weekly or monthly? Schedule is the first thing I look to when I see something like that. Though the artist deciding they ran out of shits to give on a a panel is not exactly unheard of either. (See hunterxhunter_chicken.jpg) Adapting to an anime tends to make that less glaring at any rate. Usually. Cross your fingers I guess.

Like in a "we're translating but we don't really know much about who we're working with" kinda way. His catchphrase is "hard-on," Viz? Sheesh. I only did a compare/contrast on the first volume and found it remarkably close to EHS' version but haven't looked at subsequent volumes; I'll take Theowulv's word on it though. I'm still pissy about it given that Golden Kamuy seems to require a lot of research and care so Viz piggybacking on scanlators seems particularly obnoxious here. I'll mention for the millionth time that I picked this up because of scanlations and the quality of said scanlations so that poo poo matters

It's a real shame that Viz seems to be phoning it in and just copying what we did (and in this case making it worse for no reason).
