We did xmas games and our team name was The Lib Dems for lots of gentle gags. then after an hour or so my wealthy uncle exploded in fury about what a good man vince cable, that we were 'debasing politics' and something incoherent about buying a house.

it was very odd to see a lib dem appear momentarily passionate about something

Lol at attacking others for being out of touch while lauding the loving monarchy with a Beatles reference on the same drat page.

Merry Christmas everyone. We usually make Christmas a simple affair, since the family is spread out over the continent, but this year we joined the entire extended family for a massive Christmas celebration in the UK. Wouldn't usually post this kind of thing on SA, but I was pretty confused about the various Christmas traditions the English side of the family made a big fuss about. Is it normal that everyone has to wear brown at Christmas? I think they assumed everyone would just know that, but I've literally never heard of that before. Maybe it's a Cumbrian tradition?

British side of the family

Everyone was real happy about Brexit though, so the fact that their continental family didn't "respect our traditions" didn't completely ruin Christmas for them.

Nah, the "look a decade or two older than you are"-look is his way of appearing serious and regal enough to supersede Charles and become king when the queen dies.

Yep

There were more family nazis in the preceding days; I met one second cousin a few times removed or however that works a few days ago at a family lunch, I learned later he was the literal failed product of a late term abortion which made him kind of stupid (which is sad in itself) but still able to function in all areas of life and hold a conversation, and who spent the entire lunch going on about 'black scum' and immigrants and boasted about openly mocking and harassing homeless people (which sort of precluded any chance of me feeling sympathy for him(or anything good really)).

I was kind of shocked that someone would openly say that because I'd never heard that sort of blatant hatred stated explicitly out loud. The pregnant, married woman I was sitting next to, who he was hitting on (which was also super gross but he didn't touch her at least, and we developed a safe word where we could extricate ourselves from the situation), was also shocked, but we went along with it because etiquette and he seemed like he had a fragile ego which we didn't want to poke too much.

I wonder how much appeasement of terrible social and political opinions is just due to the fact that the people who hold them have such fragile egos that any sort of conversation that isn't just straightforward agreement agitates them to the point of outbursts, which normal people don't want to instigate in the middle of family dinners and otherwise pleasant social functions?

Anyway I think my family might just have a relatively high nazi quotient in general but the nazis are quite peripheral I think, it's easy to manoeuvre around them, noone pays much attention to them because they're all pretty worthless people also :)

have you considered confronting them about the whole "enjoys genocide" thing

The best article in the spectator this year, please read.

"Let’s try to explain to ordinary people what drives the liberal elite. The elite persists with some very strange and disturbing views. Are its members brainwashed, snobbish or just so remote from real life that they do not understand how things work? What is the pathology of liberal eliteness?

Why would anyone support Hillary Clinton — a ruthless, charmless Washington insider with socialist tendencies? Why do lawyers, churchmen, the BBC and, indeed, most educated people support the EU — an organisation as saturated with smug self-righteousness as it is with corruption; one which created the euro, which in turn has caused millions of people to be unemployed; an organisation which combines a yawning democratic deficit with incompetence over immigration and economic growth?

The elite are supposed to be educated. So why are they so silly?

Ah! There is a clue. That word ‘educated’. What does ‘educated’ mean today? It doesn’t mean they know a lot about the world. It means they have been injected with the views and assumptions of their teachers. They have been taught by people who themselves have little experience of the real world. They have been indoctrinated with certain ideas. Here are some key ones.... "

Much like that clip of Roy Moore saying "perhaps America is a great producer of evil in the world" followed straight facedly with "because of gay marriage", "the problem with the liberal elite is their education", followed by "They have been taught that capitalism is inherently bad." is one of those "yes... ah, no" things.

when my neighbours' grandma had to babysit their kids she'd put a few drops of rum in the kids' juice/tea if they were being too lively and that calmed them right down.
