Big Bad Voodoo Lou posted:I didn't think to check if that was still in print, but it was an insane, chaotic, fascinating take on the Shadow, especially for a late '80s proto-Vertigo series. Baker has since dismissed it as simple, uninspired work for hire. It's in print and digital as the Shadow Master Series https://www.comixology.com/The-Shadow-Master-Series/comics-series/16654 Also Baker is rightfully disenchanted with the mainstream comics industry, so no surprise there. I agree with your take though.

I had no idea. I used to own all the singles before a major collection purge. (Chaykin's Blood and Judgment miniseries survived, and I later got him to sign all four issues.) I used to wonder if McFarlane ripped off his Sam and Twitch characters from the Helfer Shadow series, but I haven't read either in about 20 years.

This might be too specific (slash not really exist?), but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for comics along the lines of Fraction/Aja's Hawkeye #19, that use things like ASL etc. rather than speech, or otherwise really try to represent the experience of having a disability in a good/novel way. I've found a lot of comics that are about disability/treat it pretty well (i.e., Stitches, Marbles, It's a Bird, etc.) but have had trouble finding any other comics that really committed to things like ASL/alternative representations of communication. Do y'all have any recommendations for comics that might fit the bill?

I have an addiction to wasting money I should be saving by buying terrible stories written on low quality paper with poor binding that I need you to help me enable until I am destitute, if you have the time and wish to indulge me. What would y'all say are the must read stories for Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, and Wonder Woman? I'm interested in all three, but don't know where to start because comic books is a maze with no clear opening or ending that one must grope around in the dead of an eternal night with only the whispers of strangers as guidance. Jessica Cruz is easy. She only appeared in Justice League right at the end of the N52, so with JL trade #6 on to Darkseid War. For Kyle, I don't care for the 90's GL comics so much, so I'll say Omega Men by Tom King. I loved the Green Lantern Corps comic that ran alongside Geoff Johns' main series. That's about everyone but Hal, so Kyle makes appearances there. edit: I guess you should try the 90's comic. There's a new trade of that stuff https://www.amazon.com/Green-Lantern-Kyle-Rayner-Vol/dp/1401276873. Just don't forget about Omega Men! Wonder Woman has a lot of definitive runs for people. Start with George Pérez's series which rebooted her in the mid 80's. If that doesn't work for you, jump to Greg Rucka's graphic novel 'The Hiketeia' and initial series (which I think is bundled in the new collections.) My wife really really likes Elfquest, she's read it on and off for many years now. She also likes shoujo a whole lot, which is apparently typical according to another random post I found in BSS while searching about Elfquest. Is there anything else out there in the comic world that's similar to Elfquest? Or should I be asking this in the indie comic recommendation thread?

Elfquest is one of my favourite comics. I’d recommend Usagi Yojimbo for the adventure / fantasy feel though it doesn’t have quite the same epic scope. Bone is a bit more kid oriented but it does have the epic scope. Saga might also work. It’s a smaller story but it has the more open attitude towards sex that Elfquest throws in there.

These recommendations look really good, thanks! Think I'll give the wife the first book of Saga at some point, and I think I may use Usagi and Bone for some Christmas gifts for nephews.

Usagi is excellent but there is a lot of death so it may depend on the age. It is handled tastefully though.

And not as hosed-up as Beautiful Darkness, which was a bit of a relief. Put me in mind a bit of the Artic Marauder by Jacques Tardi, though probably only because AR is another fun modern (well 1970s) take on the genre. Its about a Nemo-esque techno pirate, and is quite tounge-in-cheek. The art is great, it was done by scratchboard and tries to replicate woodcut illustrations of the Victorian-era. quote:In 1899, LAnjou, a ship navigating the Arctic Ocean from Murmansk, Russia, to Le Havre, France comes across a stunning sight: A ghostly, abandoned vessel perched high atop an iceberg. But exploring this strange apparition is the last thing the sailors will ever do, as their own ship is soon dispatched to Davy Jones locker via a mysterious explosion. I don't know any of the writers apart from Dan Abnett from his Warhammer books, but I enjoy Wolverine, Deadpool, the X-men. I'm pretty open to anything as I don't know too much about any of it. I liked the Constantine comics but I don't think he's marvel and I also read the walking dead before the show. I'd like to read any of the big popular or critically acclaimed arcs, as well as interesting one-offs like Old Man Logan.

The follow-ups to Old Man Logan were good. Basically, there was an event that destroyed all Marvel Universes, mixed them up in a war and rebuilt the place, which allowed him to jump over into the 'real world.' Here's the event: https://www.comixology.com/Secret-Wars/digital-comic/339426 The Old Man Logan tie-in miniseries: https://www.comixology.com/Old-Man-Logan-2015/comics-series/41838 and the series that followed where he's in the regular Marvel Universe: https://www.comixology.com/Old-Man-Logan-2016/comics-series/62873 I stopped reading that one after the first writer left (trade #5) If you're looking for big crossovers, there's a lot to avoid. Pretty much the only good ones in 15 years are the above Secret Wars and one the same writer (Jonathan Hickman) did before called Infinity. Basically, every other event stinks, so go for regular comic runs. My faves: Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender: https://www.comixology.com/Uncanny-X-Force-2010-2012/comics-series/4832 Which is Wolverine's shady ops team featuring Deadpool. Thor by Jason Aaron: First series with regular guy Thor: https://www.comixology.com/Thor-God-of-Thunder/comics-series/9009 Second series introducing the female Thor: https://www.comixology.com/Thor-2014-2015/comics-series/26736 Secret Wars tie-in with a multiverse Thor police force: https://www.comixology.com/Thors-2015/comics-series/43432 Current series still featuring the female Thor: https://www.comixology.com/The-Mighty-Thor-2015/comics-series/58195 Recent ex-Thor miniseries: https://www.comixology.com/The-Unworthy-Thor-2016-2017/comics-series/81061 The Vision by Tom King: https://www.comixology.com/Vision-2015-2016/comics-series/58175 Robot Avenger, The Vision, decides to become more human by creating his own regular suburban Vision family, and it all breaks down into domestic horror and tragedy. Does anyone have that Graphic Ink: Darwyn Cooke hardcover? How are the stories in All-Star Western #34, Jonah Hex #33 and #50, and Weird War Tales #1? I already have several of his random issues, and a local shop is having a 50% off sale tomorrow, so I may see how cheap I can get some of his other stand-alone issues for. I'm also going to be on the lookout for any stand-alone Mike Allred, Arthur Adams, and Phil Noto books I don't have, that will be really cheap, and any good Captain Cold and Rogues appearances. Any recommendations for Big Barda and the New Gods? I just read King's Miracle Man to date last night, and I remember Orion turning up in Azzarello's Wonder Woman for a bit. That's about the extent of my experience. Should I go back to Kirby in the 70s? Also is there an "Infinity Gauntlet/War" of Darkseid stories? Final Crisis (borrowed from my cousin) and Seven Soldiers (bought the 2 trades on recommendation) were pretty inscrutable to me since I've barely read any non-Vertigo DC. I've really enjoyed All Star Superman, Rucka Batwoman, Azzarello WW, and various Batman over the years, and have bounced off of almost everything else I've tried. bagrada fucked around with this message at 17:14 on Dec 26, 2017 |

Unless you cant stand old comics, absolutely go to Kirby for the Fourth World. All the weird descriptions about Paranoid Pills and Funky Flashman in King's comic are direct lifts from Kirby. If you read digitally, the Mister Miracle collection is $5 right now https://www.comixology.com/Mister-Miracle-by-Jack-Kirby/digital-comic/573658 For big Darkseid epics, after New Gods, he returned to be a big bad for a stretch of The Legion of Superheroes https://www.comixology.com/Legion-of-Super-Heroes-1980-1985-The-Great-Darkness-Saga/digital-comic/68781 and most recently, he and the Anti-Monitor from Crisis on Infinite Earths had a big-ol' fight in a pretty fun and digestible modern event where the JLs take on crazy god powers https://www.comixology.com/Justice-League-2011-2016-Vol-7-Darkseid-War/digital-comic/330399 PT1 https://www.comixology.com/Justice-League-2011-2016-Vol-8-Darkseid-War-Part-2/digital-comic/417256 PT2 https://www.comixology.com/Justice-League-The-Darkseid-War-Power-of-the-Gods/digital-comic/358420 Tie-in one-shots for each powered up JL member. The Tom King Green Lantern one is really good. For Seven Soldiers, were you put off by the opening issue seeming too complicated? That drops right off in the actual miniseries. They're pretty self contained and easy going till they meet at the end. Mister Miracle is the exception, unfortunately (seeing as you might be primarily interested in him and Darkseid) I remember that being confusing and messy, though I would like to revisit it with more under my belt. Final Crisis is such an unfriendly deep dive into DC history that it'll require you to look things up constantly, but I really enjoyed becoming antiquated with all the insanity of the DCU. There are some really good page by page notations out there on the internet. And it leads to Multiversity, which, more like Seven Soldiers, actually has really entertaining stories amongst all the meta-textural stuff. It started out being written by Justice League International co-writer J.M. DeMatteis, so it has a lot of that kind of silly, sitcom-style humor. The late Len Wein and then Doug Moench later took it over and weaved in more Fourth World elements. A little overwhelmed by the Marvel sale on Amazon. I'm not a longtime comic reader but I am familiar with most characters through video games and general nerdery. I did read Civil War about 7 years ago. Other than that I've recently read Capt America up to just post-Civil War, Way's Deadpool Vol 1, and Claremont's Nightcrawler Vol 1 thanks to other recent Amazon sales (enjoyed all three). Beyond that I'm not up to speed on recent and current events in the universe. Right my list has Moon Knight: From the Dead, Iron First: the Last Iron Fist Story, Black Panther: A Nation Under our Feet, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Avengers, Infinity Gauntlet, Way's Deadpool Vol 2, and X-Men Gold. Looking for recommendations on more Cap, Iron Man (seems to have a lot of different titles), X-Men (I like Nightcrawler, Kitty, and Wolverine. Interested in them or any "newer" characters I might not recognize). I'm also open to recommendations on other tie-in events or lesser known/niche characters. If the older stuff hasn't aged well I have no problem jumping in on more recent stuff.

You might also like Remender's run which immediately follows, but it's a pretty radical change in direction that not everyone likes. For like 9 issues, Iron Man was "evil" and moved to San Francisco in Superior Iron Man. That was a great, albeit short and without a resolution series. For Wolverine, check out Tom Taylor's ongoing All-New Wolverine which stars Laura.
