this is fantastic. wonderfully written. also contains this:

quote:

Having witnessed Cravan’s work back in Paris, Duchamp and Picabia invited Cravan to deliver one of his anti-art lectures at the exhibition. He didn’t disappoint. On the day, he stood half cut in front of his audience, swore at them, waved his cock around, and was promptly arrested.

Glad you enjoyed it - you will probably also like this review of George Plimpton’s sports books from a couple years ago. Plimpton wrote Shadow Box and covered a bunch of the seminal 20th century fights for SI. (Incidentally, he also founded The Paris Review.)

Is there going to be a 2018 thread now that the first title fight of 2018 is over? Started getting into watching boxing this year and would love to see some commentary about 2017 in a new thread.

Yeah. I fly home tomorrow and will start working on a thread to be posted by the end of the week. Been hashing out my top 20 on the boat and think I have a list I'm happy with.

I'll include MMM's write up of the HBO fights last year too and if anyone has something else they'd like featured feel free to PM me or post it here. Thanks for being patient everyone :)

Also, welcome to the SA boxing thread!

Much appreciated. Is there a discord or IRC for the boxing thread? I didn't see it in any of the prior posts and it would be cool to have some live chat with people during fights.

No but that's a good idea. Dunno if there's something like that for PSP at large either. Mostly we just do game day threads.

Edit;: I'll look into setting up a discord sever when I get back.

that seems to be the plan

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/42602402

quote:

Anthony Joshua's world heavyweight unification fight against Joseph Parker of New Zealand is poised to be confirmed.

The Briton, 28, holds the IBF and WBA belts, while Parker, due in London this weekend, is the WBO champion.

Reports suggest the fight will take place on 31 March, at Cardiff's Principality Stadium

Joshua then hopes to fight WBC holder Deontay Wilder -no boxer has held all four heavyweight belts simultaneously.

Parker's representative David Higgins has been in the UK since Monday to conclude negotiations and a news conference is expected next week.

Contracts are expected be signed and a statement will then be released by the fighters' respective promoters, Matchroom Boxing and Duco Events.

During lengthy talks towards the end of last year, the main stumbling block had been the splitting of proceeds - but agreement was reached and 25-year-old Parker will earn between 30-35%.

GGG won that fight and he'd be insane to give Canelo and Golden Boy another chance to steal a crooked decision.

Julio Cruz

I think GGG wins via wide decision or late stoppage in the rematch. He came out pretty cautious in the first fight until he decided Canelo couldn't hurt him, in a rematch he'd be immediately coming out swinging. Plus it'd make them both an absolute poo poo-ton of money.

It'd be a decent fight, and probably end in an egregious robbery or best case another garbage draw. Pass.

this would be the legacy move imo. let it stand as a draw and allow future generations to look back and see that yeah, the best middleweight on the planet actually had been decided.

the money move is obviously to take it and get robbed.

Surprised people here are so bullish on GGG in the rematch, the general consensus is that Canelo is the one who will improve more. Either way, the first fight was a great one and I'd love to see another.

No way dude, put big fights on the biggest possible weekends for them imo. Especially Cinco de Mayo where people would be barbecuing and partying anyway, and getting a bunch of people to buy into PPV becomes an easy sell.

It's also much easier for people to get into Vegas to see the fight if it's a holiday weekend. The hotels and casinos want that date just as much as HBO do.
