If anything happens we'll probably stop doing the combat drills and amp up our propaganda instead. My biggest worry is that North Korea is just going to start selling nuclear material to terrorist groups, which I wouldn't put past them.

I'd worry way more about global climate change than a nuclear holocaust, to be honest, because the point at which we should have been doing something significant about that passed a long time ago, and instead we have a knucklehead tearing into the research and engaging in a moronic Twitter propaganda campaign against action. I look forward to explaining what the coastal cities were like to my kid.

No point in even thinking about it. It's 100% posturing. North Korea is not about to invite its own destruction, and for all his bluster Trump lacks any meaningful inclination towards war. So far his contribution to the Middle East has been to shrug and just let some generals do what they want. He hasn't initiated poo poo, and I don't think any important general is particularly keen on war with North Korea.

I'm ready. NK is not dumb enough to launch a nuclear first strike against the US. They know full well that they would get utterly glassed in retaliation. This is nothing new for NK, what they want are economic and diplomatic concessions. Their foreign policy isn't insane, it's very deliberate and calculated to toe the line and extract maximum benefits. On the other hand Trump is absolutely enough of a moron to order a conventional (probably not nuclear) first strike against NK. Whether the US military is able to prevent him from doing that, who knows. Basically you should be far more worried about our fragile-ego idiot manchild President than Kim Jong Un.

Dapper_Swindler posted:I have sorta made peace with it. That fat gently caress wants a war with nk or elsewhere. NK has nukes and trumps a moron. One thing this administration has made me very acutely aware of is whether an opinion or reaction that I have is based on whether it affects me personally, or whether it's something that should matter no matter who or where the people are the thing in question affects. Like, does it only matter to me that swatting is a thing that can get random people minding their own business killed just because suddenly it's brought home to me that the NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH sign at the entrance of my street means there's a good possibility a well-meaning police department might act on a tip from the nutball three houses down and shoot me at my front door? Or does the fact that thinking about it affecting me makes it seem to loom larger in my own consciousness mark it as something I should have paid more attention to regardless of whether it has the potential to affect me or not? More and more I view voters going in front of cameras talking about how they only vote based on how things affect them personally with disgust. Oh, suddenly you have an opinion about the capital gains tax, do you? Your opinion of the tax reform plan depends on how your personal take-home pay will be affected, never mind these hundred other representative households (who, gasp, are not you) from across the spectrum? You don't care about Obamacare because you have insurance through work, so gently caress the individual mandate? Immigration and the wall and the travel ban are all things you want to just not have to think about, right, because that's other people. Oceans gonna rise? Who cares, you don't live on a coastal floodplain. As long as you're okay, that's where the mental calculations come clanking to a halt, right? Similarly, if the nukes are going to start flying, and I feel myself starting to worry because I happen to live in a metro area that's likely to be the first on the target list, well, it's gonna be someone, right? It's not like surviving would be a hell of a lot better. I'm still ashamed of myself for having reacted selfishly and self-centeredly in the days following 9/11 (when for all we knew all the major cities were going to be hit with anthrax and suicide bombing waves to flatten whole urban population centers) to the extent that it knocked my thinking cockeyed for years. It's really only been the last two-three years I've been able to fully shake it. Eh. I should have just deleted this like I've deleted so many other posts that I ended up writing and not posting in this thread.

KickerOfMice posted:Ehh, Lowtax lives in Missuorabraska, Ohiokota or something so he'll still be around. Paralysis of the United States mail was more of a shock to Edgar Quisenberry than anything that had occurred thus far. At last, he confessed to himself the impossible reality of the day. Realization did not come all at once. It could not, for his mind refused to assimilate it. He attempted to accept the probability that the Treasury in Washington, Wall Street, and Federal Reserve banks everywhere, all were now radioactive ash. No longer any clearinghouses or correspondent banks. He was sickened by the realization that a great part of his own assets-that is, the assets of his bank-were no longer assets at all. Of what use were Treasury bonds and notes when there was no Treasury? What good were the municipal bonds of Tampa, Jacksonville, and Miami when there were no municipalities? Who would straighten all this out, and how, and when? Who would tell him? Who would know? With all communications out, he could not even confer with fellow bankers in San Marco. He began to sweat. He took out his fountain pen and began jotting down figures on a scratch pad. If he could just get everything down in figures, they ought to balance. They always had. Edgar's cashier came into the office and said, "We're not cashing out-of-town checks, are we, Mr. Quisenberry?" "Certainly not! How can we cash out-of-town checks when we don't know whether a town's still there?" Edgar flinched, remembering that only yesterday he had cashed a big check for Randolph Bragg on an Omaha bank. Certainly Omaha, right in the center of the country, ought to be safe. Edgar had never given much thought to all the talk about rockets and missiles and such. He always prided himself on keeping his feet firmly on the ground, and examining the facts in a hardheaded, practical manner. And the facts, as he had publicly stated, were that Russia intended to defeat the United States by scaring us into an inflationary, socialistic depression, and not by tossing missiles at us. The country was basically sound and the Russians would never attack a basically sound country. And yet they had attacked, and if they could hit Florida they could hit Omaha-or anywhere.

Republicans posted:I feel like if we hit NK it'll be all-in like Iraq was, at least as far as destroying all their means of retaliation via airstrikes goes. I could see us doing some massive cruise missile strikes where we try to blow up their entire long range missile program and nuclear program at once. And Republicans would play it like the israeli strike on iraq's nuclear reactors and to be honest, the media would eat that poo poo up. The "some strong man had to stop crazy kim" narrative will play strong domestically. The question is, what would NK and the international community do?
