No they won't because this is a federal tax cut. Residents of those states have more money, except for a relatively small number of rich but not gently caress-you-rich people. There is no need to cut spending to reduce the tax burden after a 1.5T federal tax cut.

That's why the GOP wanted to cap SALT, which they see as a federal subsidy for high tax states. And they're right to see it that way, that's what it is.

Calling SALT a subsidy for high-tax states seems pretty untenable when you consider that high-tax states also tend to be net contributors to the federal coffers and low-tax states tend to be net beneficiaries, even with SALT. Some of this effect an be explained by many high-tax states skewing higher on income, but some of that can in turn be explained by better public funding.

E: Basically it lets states assume control of taxation/spending without screwing their residents.

EE: The GOP state's righters should be all about SALT, but they're not because the GOP agenda is really only about maintaining a burgeoning underclass (of minorities) to exploit.

You responded to an actual, happening-every-day scenario in which a capped SALT deduction, as a policy, hurts working non-bosses that you didn't know was possible because you thought property taxes were the only kind of SALT with any significance by doing a goal-post shift over to defending the Trump upward redistribution as a whole, and used an opaque tax calculator put out by a newspaper to do so because you don't actually know anything about taxes or this bill. You're taking a discussion about how the new policy is objectively worse than the one it replaced, and trying to defend it by comparing the previous tax code to some imaginary Good and Socialist tax policy that doesn't exist. You're a bad poster and a stupid person.

Taxes need to be raised across the board. Democrats should not even be entertaining the notion of tax cuts for anyone but the absolute poorest. Dem response to further starving of the dog by the GOP shouldn't be to do the exact same thing.

If you make above average income you should be appreciative of that and not be angling for more tax cuts while the country's infrastructure crumbles all around. Yes it's disappointing that a Republican government was elected and that they got to do what every Republican government does: cut taxes. That doesn't mean you get to go all "gently caress you, got mine" just because you're not quite rich enough to benefit from them robbing the country.

The whole "SALT deductions are bad because they effectively subsidize state government taxation, which is why we are removing them" argument falls apart when you focus on the point that the SALT deduction was only removed for individuals. Corps will still be able to deduct SALT. I guess it's OK for the Fed to subsidize state taxes for corps...?

No I didn't do any of that.

I will walk you through the Washington Post's calculations step by step to show you that someone making the median income in Fairfax County is getting a tax cut from this bill, if that will help. You have to be making at least $200k (double the NOVA median income) before you even start to see a tax penalty, that is just a fact. We can go through the math tomorrow if you like, but this is probably a waste of time since your reaction to black-and-white facts about how the tax bill actually works is just incoherent rage and a bunch of ad homs so whatevs.

You know what bothers me about this view the most? The GOP tax plan doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it works in concert with their ideas for entitlement cuts, healthcare cuts and welfare reform. Someone might end up with a bit more money in their pocket due to taxes, but they’re going to feel it when their SSA check is cut, or when their ACA subsidy no longer exists. You can’t be in favor of one without the other. It’s all one system.

It's interesting that all of these bad ideas and policies coming out of this confederacy of dunces in the White House are forcing us to evaluate the structure of things more closely. I had actually never been aware of the disparity between how much high tax states like NJ and CA contribute vs. how much is spent. Like you said, it's quite literally the opposite that high tax states receive a subsidy for their SALT; they're subsidizing low tax states pretty heavily
