Stop worrying about it. Brees would never come here anyway. The likely FA targets are Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins, and I don’t think either signs without being the highest paid QB with a guaranteed contract. Browns have tons of cash to spend so it would be worth it. Whoever they get will be replacing a guy who had 31 turnovers and got sacked almost 40 times behind a pretty good line.

It looks like he has a contract that has fake years and a massive cap hit if he's not given a new contract in 2018. So he can get a lot more money from the Saints than anyone else because they'd have a $18m cap hit if they let him walk. He's on what is, in reality, a short-term contract (probably because the saints have been in cap hell for forever) but is on paper a long-term contract with a large signing bonus that is actually for two years spread over five. edit: it's a two-year $25m per year contract, but $18m of the cap hit was deferred into fake years. The Saints have to re-sign him in 2018 or eat the cap hit. evilweasel fucked around with this message at 16:31 on Jan 2, 2018 |

Going into the season with Cody Kessler as the veteran backup was mind boggling.

Over The Cap dot com posted:Drew Brees signed a one year contract extension worth $24.25 million, all of which is guaranteed, on September 7, 2016 with the Saints. Brees, who had been scheduled to earn $20 million in 2016 will now earn $31.25 million, including a $30 million signing bonus per Andrew Brandt. The contract contains three voidable contract years to prorate the signing bonus. The new contract reduces Brees cap number from $30 million to $17.25 million in 2016. Brees has a no trade clause and can not be franchise tagged when his contract voids. If the contract voids and Brees is not extended the Saints will carry a dead money charge of $18 million in 2019 for Brees. The deadline for the void is the final day of the 2017 league year. edit: Holy cow three of the Saints top four contract hits this year are OL edit2: and then the other two OL are first round picks (Peat, G, #13 in 2015; Ramczyk, T, #32 in 2017). Based on the structure I think there's no way it's a team option cause no way in hell was Brees willing to play for the $6m a year it calls for in the three voided years: its definitely going to void somehow if not extended. Both sites are a little fuzzy on the exact contract mechanic there though.

Both sites are a little fuzzy on the exact contract mechanic there though. that $6m a year is just the prorated signing bonus. it accelerates if he gets cut the saints have gotten a lot better about cap management but they paid about $2.7 million this year for a few lovely games of Adrian Peterson, and then traded him to the Cardinals who paid about $500k for the rest of the season if I'm reading spotrac correctly so they're not, yanno, good at it yet

Dunno why that's a contract type that exists, but I guess it does! they're just going to kick the can further down the road and sign Brees to a contract that gives him $25m or so in the 2018 season. And when I say "it accelerates if he gets cut", I mean against the cap. That's why on spotrac, it shows that there's an $18m cap hit if he's cut right now. Drew already has that money, it's just for cap wizard reasons that it doesn't also count against the cap in that first year.

a patagonian cavy posted:they're just going to kick the can further down the road and sign Brees to a contract that gives him $25m or so in the 2018 season. Right, I understood that whole part - it is a two year contract masquerading as a five year contract to spread the signing bonus over fake years. It's just the exact contractual mechanics of ensuring those three years are completely fake I do not understand: if the years are automatically voided (and how on earth that's allowed under the salary cap) or if it's just that Brees is given the option to void them but it's understood he would void them no matter what because he would literally be playing for free if he didn't. Since I don't think he is allowed to literally play for free, that means that the contract must automatically void rather than merely being optionally voidable.

It's completely because of how signing bonuses are treated under the cap- The bonus has been prorated to be spread across the 5 years after signing and accelerates to the current year if (for whatever reason) the player is no longer on the team. It's in the spotrac notes that Drew's contract auto-voids (because he will be a free agent, and thus no longer on the team) at the end of the league year. Because of that, if the Saints don't re-sign him, the remaining bonus cap hit all accelerates to hit in the 2018 league year. All of this is moot because Drew is going to be playing QB for the New Orleans Saints in 2018.

Throw all 118 million at him. Make him say no. Tie him up to a chair in an abandoned warehouse and start pressing 100 million on his face and tell him to cry “I submit!” Lol I know he’s not coming. Ah well there’s always Kirk Cousins and Kaep if we want but I’d prefer Jackson.

Yeah, Drew Brees leaving the saints was an idea predicated on the Saints still sucking. They no longer suck, so he's going to be there. The Browns should get Alex Smith / Kirk Cousins, but likely won't, because the firings have told everyone that they have to draft a franchise QB #1 and that's that, and neither of those QB's are going to take a job where they will be thrown out in a year when Buffalo or Jacksonville or Arizona will be offering a long term starting gig and the same gigantic pile of money.
