Didn't trump make a tweet saying "Democrats won't help him" if they gain control of the senate? I can't find it but I swear I remember reading it not so long ago. E: They think they're going to the vet, but they're going to the Park.

In fairness though, even the growing likelihood that Democrats may reclaim the House could be an incentive not to run again since it sucks to be the minority party.

Uncle Wemus posted:Is this the normal amount of politicians to be retiring There's definitely an uptick of people resigning because of scandals and people resigning because they can't win with Trumpism. But that doesn't mean there aren't some usual cases of people just deciding to hang it up for personal, business, or political reasons. You seek higher office. You seek a more profitable position you secured while in office. You just get tired of it. There's more reasons than Trump or scandal to quit. But Trump and scandal are definitely in the mix.

VitalSigns posted:Truth hurts. It's not ewww old people, it's hey great for Bernie that he's in good shape for his age but this is kind of a job where you'd want to have a great deal of certainy the guy isn't going to drop dead during the campaign or his term in office, or even that he won't be dealing with cognitive impairment or ill health. It's a hard job for anyone, and even at middle age people are complaining about how much less energy they have to stay up late and poo poo. There are genuine problems with an 80 year old president that can't be handwaved away by pretending people just don't like the elderly, and our oldest presidents are prime examples of why. Also it's way too early to say he has the best chance to win, since we don't know who the other candidates are yet and if his age would become an issue. Arguably presenting a contrast with Trump's advanced age would be nice though, and obviously Bernie can't do that even if his own advanced age doesn't become an issue.
