Do I suggest in my letter that I'm a disillusioned republican who might vote D as punishment if they continue to support _____? Would they even take that seriously? I probably wouldn't.

Maybe I'll rub the envelope with an ancient $100 bill from the confederacy and then they'll be subconsciously drawn to it.

You can call them every day and leave a rude message if you want. If you're actually in the district they'll at least take it down. I haven't heard of anyone doing town halls lately but you could go to one of those and boo loudly at them.

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Well, you and your buddies get together, go down to home depot and get some supplies. Then build a guillotine to leave on your representative's front lawn in the middle of the night as a message.

Texas Monthly has a highlight piece on Beto O'Rourke, who is running against Cruz, if you are not familiar with who he is. Does Beto O’Rourke Stand a Chance Against Ted Cruz? The tl;dr is that he checks all the standard progressive Dem checkboxes except he is pro free trade and he has won every race he has ever been in by ridiculous ground campaign wherein he is constantly block walking. In office he keeps that same level of constituent engagement. He is planning on doing the same against Cruz by visiting every Texas county before ballot day.

It's a stunt, because visiting King and Cottle counties makes no sense. Wendy Davis was in Wichita county like a week before the election. She pulled 25ish % there. Why bother? Drive up turn out in the cities, you will not get elected off visiting the 20 people in Loving county.

Trabisnikof
Dec 24, 2005

Of course it is a stunt but I think the idea that Democrats can win by just turning out the cities has been proven false time and time again. To win statewide Democrats need to GOTV in the cities and also hold the Republican margin down in rural counties too.

He does have some DSA person running against him but I saw her tweeting about Seth Rich getting bumped off by Killary so I don’t think that will be a problem.

Lipstick Apathy
Article about Veronica Birkenstock, who is trying to primary Michael Burgess in his U.S. House district up here in Denton.

quote:

Birkenstock runs Practical Employee Solutions, which facilitates H-2B visas for temporary foreign workers. And she has one very notable client: the Trump International Beach Resort in Miami.

Practical Employee Solutions has filed H-2B visa applications for more than 100 temporary foreign workers to fill positions as maids, waiters, pool attendants, and bartenders at the resort. President Donald Trump makes liberal use of the program for his resorts and golf clubs, including his “winter White House” at Mar-a-Lago, which in July put in applications for 78 new seasonal foreign workers. Trump himself doesn’t own the International Beach Resort, but licenses his name to it. Last year, he brought in between $100,000 and $1 million in income for the resort’s use of the Trump brand, according to his personal financial disclosure statement.

Beyond helping facilitate the temporary work supply for Trump’s resorts, Birkenstock is also a Trump campaign fundraiser who was once listed as a member of the president’s Labor Department transition team.

Running to Burgess’ right is a tough sell. To do it, Birkenstock, who did not respond to requests for an interview, has cozied up to big names in Trumpworld, aligned herself with candidates like recently defeated Alabama Republican Roy Moore, and taken a “drain the swamp” approach that emphasizes the incumbent’s 15 years in Washington and Congress’ general ineffectiveness. She says she is “frustrated with the current long-term Representative not getting the job done as promised.”

https://www.thedailybeast.com/she-imports-trumps-foreign-labor-now-shes-running-for-congress
Well it doesn't surprise me at all that this Frisco Republican who works in the H-2B visa industry is a Trump type. The point, of course, is to crack down on immigrants just enough to keep them suppressed and compliant as a low-paid workforce for the wealthy developers who actually run things around here ... and developers like Trump.

Anyways, I doubt she's going to beat Burgess.

He's a legit good dude. I met him on a couple occasions at political events when I was living in El Paso. He is very personable and down to earth. He ticks all the right boxes with no real negatives. Plus coming from El Paso I think he'll have a better understanding of what needs to be done to get out the vote in latino communities, which is a huge impediment to winning statewide.

Yep! My main concern with him is the aforementioned name recognition (which comes from not being super loud atm), but he's relatively young and his positions on the issues are solid. He's got my vote so far, and I think he's got a fair chance considering the GOP is doubling down on stupidity. poo poo, my parents have said & done nearly fuckall about politics this year, and part of that comes from shame.

If O'Rourke can just earn some media for house candidates that would be worth considering a win. Beating Cruz is an uphill battle anyway, but if O'Rourke can drive turnout in a few districts that could make the difference in the US House.

He also needs to hammer Cruz for every negative thing he has done in the past couple of years. Mention he was up late looking at porn on twitter, play clips of him endorsing Roy Moore, make an ad about both his endorsement+non-endorsement of Trump "how can you trust what he says, he might flip-flop tomorrow."

Just had a convo with my work's pest control guy who comes in about every month. He is a tall Black man, around 40 yo. He came in and told me how the people upstairs are super uptight. (I work downstairs and with a bunch of white people). And how he gets weird looks from them all the time. (To be fair he is really tall, but he's definitely getting weird looks because he's black.)

I work in uber-Liberal Austin, in an uber-Liberal non-profit...

Anywho, that's my completely anecdotal evidence showing that middle-class white Liberals are hypocritical trash and that Austin is incredibly white and evil.

I'm torn on this one too, but I think I have to vote Beto. He's pro Medicare for All, wants to end the War on Drugs, he's come out hard against Super PACs and money-in-politics in general. Other than that, he's fairly run-of-the-mill. But not a bad choice imo

Austin is super segregated and had negative minority population growth from 2000-2010 while the city itself grew ~20%. It isn't nearly as much a Blue Utopia in a sea of Red like it likes to pretend.
