Vinegar Syndrome have two limited 5th anniversary sets where they're putting five movies onto Bluray that'd previously only been on DVD. https://vinegarsyndrome.com/shop/5-films-5-years-volume-1-and-2/ I skipped the porno one, but the Vol. 2 exploitation set looks pretty fun. Just wish they'd lose that cheesy lady sillouette logo.

Given that 90% of Vinegar Syndrome's output are either pornos or slasher movies, it just seems right to have a slightly tacky logo. Christmas Evil was also a lovely remaster. I can't imagine how bad previous DVDs must have looked between having a lot of red, grain, and diffusion filters. Also, it's on their Etiquette Pictures sublabel, but Catch My Soul was a lot of fun. It doesn't entirely work, but it's still worth seeing as a folk rock version of Othello starring Richie Havens and shot by Conrad Hall. There's also a lot of joy in owning a movie that was listed as a lost film up until a few years ago. EL BROMANCE posted:My Suspiria came yesterday, and loving that slip over the steel case. Also super happy they kind of settle the 'which language?' conundrum of Italian horror where nothing is really considered the 'right' audio track, in that they talk about the loving restoration of the English 4 channel audio over 3 pages, and then say 'Oh yeah there's the Italian dub too but we don't know much about that' at the end. If I read it correctly, the actual 4-track master was in terrible shape, but they had the separate DME (dialogue, music, and effects) stems, in beautiful condition, which allowed them to completely reconstruct the mix from scratch. They really should have included something on the visual restoration, but maybe they didn't want to toot their own horn too much considering the TLE Films one has a full hour-long despite looking absolutely drab and dim in comparison.

Yep! I’m really excited to hear it as it’s a great film to play loud, and it’ll be a great disc to show off my new system. I’m lacking rear surrounds at the moment which is a shame.

Pee leg girl looks completely out of place on the Liquid Sky box. I really think it undermines their efforts. Give it the heave-ho. Just use this: The word 'Syndrome' is enough to point to the exploitation side.

The whole "Everyone speaks their native language because it will be dubbed anyway" thing Italian films did makes a lot of sense. For one it gives you an opportunity to have a very international cast without having to worry about who speaks what languages or having to hire dialect coaches or any of that. Additionally it means everyone is speaking the language they feel most comfortable using and can focus more on the acting itself instead of having to spend a lot of effort on just speaking correctly.

For the most part, the non-English speakers aren't speaking their native language or English. Instead, they're told to phonetically pronounce the English words in the script to the best of their ability, to match the eventual dubbing. A lot of the time they had no idea what they were saying. If there were recordings of them speaking on set, it would sound like random mouth sounds.

I wonder if there's any raw clips of the shoot on the bonus disc to see some of this dialog in action. It must be hard to act opposite someone when you're not really in conversation but just reciting lines, but I know jack all about acting so maybe it's not a big deal.

Jessica Harper has said stuff about when they were making Suspiria it was sometimes hard to get into a scene because they weren't recording any audio and guys would be building sets and making all kinds of noise during the shoot.

I´m pretty sure I read somewhere that Leone at least had everyone speaking their native language. But that may have been Leone being Leone and not something common.

I love Tony Rayns' commentaries but I'm sticking with my Second Sight preorder of Pomegranates, if only for the fact that the Criterion one only seems to have one version of the movie on it. Dead Man is great though, very possibly my favorite Jarmusch. Hope they put out Ghost Dog too!

The Color of Pomegranates is a pretty terrible cover for Criterion. I'm not usually picky about covers, but the last thing it needs is something literal on the front. The UK Second Sight one is perfect: I'm probably importing the UK edition between having way more extras and both cuts. It's almost like Criterion is scared it won't be a good enough seller to warrant a comprehensive edition like Welles' Othello or Barry Lyndon.

I'd been away from buying a lot of discs for a few years, moving to renting on iTunes, but recently getting on 4k I now have a few UHD discs and special features (for big studio films at least) seem like an almost dead concept. I got Blade Runner 2 and Mother! and it's just the simplest EPK type stuff with zero audio commentary. It's pathetic. I understand it. Why bother when the market is shrinking? But, bummer.

Usually if you buy a movie on iTunes the special features will be the same as they are on the Blu Ray.

I'm way less interested in special features than I used to be. Every once in a while you get a Dangerous Days for Blade Runner, but most of the time the story of how a movie was made just wasn't interesting. "Yea, here's some footage of Chris Pratt running around a set with a bunch of green screen poo poo. We added spaceships in the computer."

Alien Covenant was pretty okay features wise. But yeah. No one cares about that all that much. The last good making of I remember is probably that 3D version of Prometheus with the 4 hour making of.
