Adverse Health Effects from Lunar Dust Exposure posted:

The toxicological effects of lunar dusts have not been studied in sufficient depth to develop an exposure standard for operations on the lunar surface. Lunar dusts have a high content in the respirable size range, they have a high surface area that is chemically reactive, and elemental iron "nano-particles" are imbedded in the dust grains. These unusual properties may cause the respirable dusts to be at least moderately toxic to the respiratory system, and larger grains to be abrasive to the skin & eye.

I thought it was way too early to say computers have taken over like that. In '88 I am pretty sure email was nowhere near common, and it certainly wouldn't be a way to communicate with Granny. Getting to do stuff ON A COMPUTER in school was a big deal, and a whole lot of kids didn't have one at home at all, if I remember right. My Mom would accept me making either a thank-you note or a thank you over the phone. (I usually managed to put it off long enough to not have to do either because I was an ungrateful little poo poo.)

Not sure what the class's "programs" being on the computer meant in the original strip, but what happened was the kids typed up a thank you letter and printed several copies, and Lynn/Elly was mad that they didn't handwrite them all.

Yeah I think I might have read more into that than was intended. I took it more as a "No one sends letters anymore" than what actually happened.

It's interesting the way phrases change. "Friday-faced", a couple hundred years ago, meant someone who looked sad or glum, because Friday (the day Jesus was supposedly crucified) was a solemn day of remembrance and remorse. Thus, no eating meat on Fridays etc.
