I've only been playing a few weeks, but my Tyranids have already made the paper! Well the digital version, at least. Newsday came to my LGS to do a piece on gaming. The store owner thought they were coming the next week, so he ran and asked if anyone had any painted models. We set ours up as if it were mid-game and the photographer snapped a bunch of pictures.

My Hive Tyrant is mostly armless until I get it magnetized.

Has anyone actually seen someone field an Astraeus heavy tank? I genuinely struggle to see how it's worth playing when compared to something like a Shadowsword.

Considering the shadowsword is borderline broken that's probably not the best metric.

The Astraeus is not very good at killing things, but it is pretty darned tough. Personally, I am waiting for them to release alternate turrets that are worthy of being on an 800 point model.

So plastic Custodes Terminators, Jetbikes, Character box and character clampack. And 40k rules for the Custodes Forgeworld kits. Am I missing anything? Does this make Custodes a fairly affordable 30k/40k army?

I’m glad we can use more of the Tzaangor stuff in 40K now, Tzaangors rock. Will probably pick up a mutalith vortex beast now (I’m guessing that was the point - weirdly it’s not in the Disciples of Tzeentch battletome).

Basically the last army anyone asked for. Saying I’m disappointed would be an understatement. Don’t get me wrong, I like the models, but with new point values Marines already feel incredibly outnumbered by horde armies, so I can only imagine what 2k points of custodes comes out as.

I don't know, I think a bunch of 30k players will be happy at a the price of bikes and terminators dropping significantly.

As a slow painter, painting a 2000 point army consisting of something like 25 models looks real achievable in a realistic timescale.

On a completely unrelated note is anyone selling some Custodes new on sprue or looking to trade something for them? I only need like 3 squads, and then I can do shields, pole arms and bolters. Unless bolters really suck.

Certainly I'm happy to see the Custodes units get 40k rules, as it's a great 30k/40k cross over army.

I'll probably pick some up as a fun fuckabout army, but it's the last thing I would have wanted them to release when there's so many xenos factions sitting around without books.

Genghis Cohen

Definitely the same here. In addition to the many armies whose core troops are older than many players, there are some really cool newer armies - ad mech, genestealers cult, harlequins etc which could use expanded support to make them fully flexible factions. Instead we will get another version of power armour-terminator armour-bikes plus new-rules versions of the same dreadnought and land raider models.

I do know people who are really keen on Custodes. But they’re a difficult choice to make a full army out of, and I think they work a lot better as an allied force. Personally I think an army of solid gold dudes covered in ornamentation is a bit much even by 40k’s standards.

They lost the coin toss between custodes and admech for my next army but even then I was planning custodes, sisters of silence and scions rather than just custodes.

I'd be far more excited about Custodes becoming a standalone army if I wasn't fully aware that, due to how 40k works, super-elite armies are already an uphill battle to even squeak out a win with.

I'm one of those guys who is really into Custodes- those Guardian Spears really do it for me. It's really weird to me that they're getting a standalone codex though because it feels like they'll have the exact same lack of unit options that we already see with admech or to a lesser extent Thousand Sons. It would have made a lot more sense from both a gameplay and lore perspective to release them as a part of Codex: Talons of the Emperor alongside the Sisters of Silence. Being able to take cheaper T3 bodies with cool specialist abilities would help alleviate a lot of the issues that elite armies are already facing.

That being said it seems like a really easy and hopefully cheap army to start and may well be where I go after I finish my Blood Angels. I really do have the hardest time resisting those spears.

Glad that Custodes are able to use their FW toys, even if I was hoping for a Xenos release.

It's pretty cool that TS are getting some of the AoS Tzeentch/Chaos toys to play with, that's a solution to their low unique unit count I never thought of.

Agreed fully, this is probably the worst time for this to come out for me because I'm already planning for Craftworld Eldar to be my second army and then GW dangles these sweet golden bananas that I love in front of my face with all these new toys they're getting. Hopefully some of the units go down points wise and that they're still viable even as an elite kind of army, but even they're not they're still amazing kits.

I mean don't get me wrong, Custodes could be fun. It's just weird seeing GW have to up the ante with more and more elite forces. Space Marines, Deathwatch, Grey Knights, now Custodes.

That said they might be fun to try out, especially since the detachment rules offer so much flexibility.

I'm glad that the Thousand Sons are getting a release and getting some goodies from AoS to fill in their gaps, but the Adeptus Custodes release feels ill-timed to me. Death Guard worked because they were a non-imperial faction that had been demanded for literal years and had the side benefit of directly benefiting existing CSM and Daemon players. CSM with an updated Plague Marine kit and Daemons with new Nurgle units. Custodes meanwhile are yet another Imperial army in a game where the "On the back foot and imminently collapsing" Imperium makes up over half the playable factions in the game. I don't think an Emperor's Children or World Eaters release would have received this same level of head scratching and teeth gnashing. Even something like Exodite Eldar or a new non-aligned Xenos faction would have been more easily welcomed I think.
