I tried hard to enjoy the show but I'm kicking myself for not knowing half of the references. I mean apparently there was a reference to a japanese speedrunner that streamed his pre-recorded run and faked running live.
I'm also felt like an old man when I saw reaction videos where they didn't recognize the Chrono Trigger reference.

I got the exact same impression. I forgot where I saw it, but I remember reading some comment that said the more serious you took anime as a medium, the more likely you were to hate it.

This is shameful, but the thing the pop team epic anime reminds me of is AMV hell. I think it's the quick cuts, glitches, and the jarring references. Also the wildly varying quality.

It's been like a decade since I watched AMV hell though.

I dunno why people struggle to understand it. It's a gag show based on reference, non-sequitur, and the contrast between cuteness and violence. It does it well. It's funny.

Reminded me a lot of the first episode of Osomatsu season 1. The episode that was later banned for too many references, and they had to go reanimate a whole new episode 1.
