THUNDERDOME LOSER 2021

It's been true for every game from Rome: Total War to TW: Attila. The Warhammer titles are the only 3D map ones where it's not like that.

I have three regrets
The first is to be born in Joseon.
I like full cavalry armies in Shogun 2 and Attila (where you can spec for faster marching) but in Rome 2 where everyone gets the double pace thing I didn't find it to be terribly useful. You do go faster but I don't think it gives you an advantage worth the trade-off.

They have an excellent chance to nail the music. I think the music has been great in these games before, if not "historically accurate" then certainly evocative and moody. Something like these moods:

It's not even that Van Dyck's music is perfect or whatever, it's more that I feel he found great instrumentation and themes as a mix between period music and modern.

RTW 2, Attila and Warhammer music have good symphonic pieces, it's just they sound generic to me.

STILL TRYING HARD
I've been having some fun playing Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai. How does Napoleon Total War hold up for gunpowder warfare? Really like setting that that perfect firing line and having the idiot AI suicide march straight into it because I have siege weapons which automatically triggers an attack.

Wonder if they'll ever fix that? It's been a part of total war games since, I think, Rome 1.

Does anyone have insight on troop formation for the early Roman empire in the grand campaign of RTW2? I've been toying with different formations for the sole reason that I was getting bored of the wide line, Archers/Heavies/Flank cavalry tactic. Right now I'm battling the greeks, and barely just cracked Sparta that had declared war. Now I don't know if it's because of their stupid morale bonuses, but when I tried the following I was almost completely massacred. Two armies of 20/20 faced each other, mostly a composition of half spearmen/hoplites/pikemen on Sparta's side and half peltasts, and on my side 4 cavalry (including the general), 4 hastatis, 8 principes, 4 velites. What I tried was to game the AI a bit by creating pockets of enemies to encircle, so I place my hastatis up front, two units together, then spaced apart, then two more. My goal was to have the enemy go at them from all sides, and have my principes come around the sides for the time it would take pikemen to get rid of the Heavy infantry.

So like this:

o - Hastatis
O - Principes
X - Cavalry
V - Velites

pre:
    VVVV
   oo oo

OOOO OOOO
    XXXX
I easily dispatched the peltasts and such with the mobile cavalry (they just had two units, one on each flank, and I was able to easily defeat those and then swing around to the peltasts that where way too advanced). But in regards to the foot troops one problem arose: they just wouldn't break, leading to the loss of my surrounded hastatis despite the enemies being sandwiched, after they attacked the hastatis. Is the design just flawed? Are there other nifty formations to try out? I don't mind going back to the usual lines, but I feel perhaps something else could do the job much more efficiently then lines grinding.

moderately annoying

Phalanxes rely pretty heavily on head on line battles and attrition. Because they're shielded your projectiles are also going to be less effective when hitting them from the front. What I like to do in Rome is use my Principes as my front line and Hastatis/Velites for flanking infantry and getting off really devastating missile volleys.

I'd use something like this:

pre:
  XX O O O O XX
ooOO OOoo
VV VV
A forward line of Principes to hold their heavy infantry in formation, with two more groups of Principes slightly behind on either flank in order to catch any phalanxes trying to push past those in front. The Hastati and Velites beside the rear Principes move to each side, behind the enemy units, and empty all of their ammunition. Once the Hastati are dry, engage whatever forces on the flanks are and move the Velites towards the center flank and continue hammering units with rear fire. Cycle charge with the cavalry where you see fit or safely can. As their flanks begin to break you can ideally envelop their entire army and begin cycle charging their remaining phalanxes to death.

Traditionally, you always fight hoplites by flanking or throwing javelins in their rear. Calvary can cycle charge or chase away enemy ranger units.

If you want to stick with the sacrificial hastati, maybe set them up in more of a wedge formation, then your principles can swallow up the hoplite flanks. Completely surrounding them won’t kill that much faster than surrounding them on three sides.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try different stuff tonight. And rear javelins, why did I not think of that. That is sure to own. Gonna finish my current "pacification" of the north italy gallic tribes, then off to continue on the greek peninsula for those sweet world wonders, all the way to thrace and the bosphorus.

The best part about this is that we know they're fairly flush with cash post-Warhammer and have a bunch of new stuff they're able to do in terms of systems and technology from building those atypical games. I'd put money on this being their best historical title to date
