The chip in the Genesis was one of the most popular audio chips out there so it wasn't the documentation. They did, actually, release some terrible sample sound code that didn't help, but what it really comes down to is that the chip wasn't that great and sound designed for other sources came out terrible on it.

Genesis sound chip was cutting edge tech for its time It was a time where the music and sounds in games were added by one of the programmers over a weekend or something so no one knew how to properly use the power of its synthesis engine
