Mine's due to be here on Saturday - but most likely Monday cos no-one actually delivers on a Saturday here in Ireland. But that, combined with the MicroMonsta and Zoom MS-50G pedal I also have on the way will make for quite the crazy studio upgrade. All I need now is an ADA8200 to add a few more connections and that's me done for the next 6 months.

I've been told they're still at least a month and a half out from some retail friends of mine, so I'm guessing these are advanced/demo units?

edit: oh, scratch that. European units.

No, the first batch went to music-store.de in Germany. Those who ordered with them early get the first batch - like me! They posted a couple out to music YouTube people, but any of the first batches will get theirs in a day or two.

I've set myself goals like "produce 30 minutes of music you can be proud of before buying any more stuff". But it's really going to be tough to keep off the GAS train. I've noticed it gets especially bad if I sell a piece of gear, cos then I'm like "this is just free money now, I should totally buy a new synth!"

But with all my mad purchases made over the past couple of months, I'm really getting sick of pressing F5 on DHL delivery pages. I'm going to work my hardest to create within my current setup and conquer the GAS.

Well it's not NAMM and it's not something I'd trip over myself to run out and get, but as predicted a neat piece of kit was indeed announced the day after I order a Peak. Moog is officially releasing the DFAM.

$599 doesn't seem too bad a price to pay. Semi-modular is nice and I'm sure people will do nice things with it.

Clearly you need to produce more ambient minimalist music. 30 minutes of that would take you about 45 minutes to make. :getin:

Speaking of GAS, the lo-fi junkie arrived after having that on waiting list for months, and... the effect seems really underwhelming. Also, I don't know if I've got a bad one, but when sound starts in it there's a audible pop as the levels spike. Like I get the idea of lo-fi, but that's making mine useless for anything with transients combined with quiet.

So, as a cautionary sharing tale for everyone, what's the device you got that you ended up using the least, or not at all?

So far, mine would be the MOTU 8x8 interface I picked up; my focusrite 2i4 is still my go-to device for fast plug-and-go (and having all the controls on the front instead of menu diving or the control app) after having the other one for a year plus.

I got a Novation Launchkey Mini because I wanted a portable Midi Controller with pads (or I thought I did). Turns out, I really did not need it to be portable, they keys are not great, and the "InControl" mode actually does more harm than good I feel in Ableton. Haven't used it in months but luckily it was only $100.

This feels sacrilegious to say given how much love the company gets (except for the person ITT who does not care for them at all) but my cautionary tale would be the Dreadbox Erebus. It's by no means a bad synth, but it's a synth that only does a very limited range of tones very well. If it fits your style of music and your setup, it's killer; if not, it's kind of a brick. So far I don't think I've managed to get my money's worth, though I'm holding on to it for now.

Mostly I just lucked out that nothing I've gotten in the last year was a dud.

I....I’m not quite sure of what I’m looking at. The promo video has people using them individually and with Mother32s and also in stacks of 2 and 3 DFAMs. They look awesome but I don’t really know why. I definitely don’t need any more sequencers at the moment. Or drum machines. I imagine one would go well in a rack with a Mother32 or 2 Mother32s or I suppose in a group of itself but I just :psyduck:

hope there’s more coming. hope they make a whole little ecosystem of eurorack-compatible modules and we can all build our own weird little moog stacks for bleep bloop times for way less than $10k

I think it's basically just another foray from them into Euro world, trying to do for drum synthesis what they (sort of) did with the Mom32: put out a full synth voice that has basically everything you need to get started, but that is easily expandable or could be dropped into a bigger Euro setup and still have some utility. I can't see it having as wide a market as the Mom32 but my friends who already have 3 M32s are exploding about it on Twitter.

As for other stuff, there's a Brother from Another Mother that was part of the advanced build class at the last Moogfest, apparently. Not sure what it is exactly but it sounds like it's some sort of synth voice again. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the next release, but in any case all the marketing material really makes it sound like this is a format they're going to keep developing.

We can do the "island of misfit toys" challenge - use one piece of gear (that produces sound) that you've criminally underused as a significant part of a track?

Mine would probably be the DSI Evolver; in terms of cost, use in anything resembling a recording and time I've had it that would be my misfit toy. I made the mistake of making that my first foray into proper synthesis and my broken logic was "it has total control over just about everything, so it'll be a great way to learn synthesis". This is a great idea except for the interface being rather brutal and lacking any other gear it ended up gathering dust after I found much more accessible pieces of gear. I really should spend some time trying to use it again; at least the Octatrack gives me a convenient hardware MIDI sequencer to use with it.

JV2080, but only because I actually was looking for a virtual analog synth. Then I got a Blofeld and I didn't want to buy a mixer. So the 2080 sits in a drawer somewhere. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
I was playing around with Ableton, my TR-8, and Minilogue, and was trying to set up the routing appropriately and had a really cool happy accident. When setting up the Minilogue, I was going to just send it MIDI Chords/Notes from Ableton so I could craft a drum beat. I accidentally set the Minilogue to receive Midi from the TR-8 and when I hit play, I was startled at the pattern that was playing, but it ended up being really cool! I cut out a few choice patterns and ended up using it in the track. But now I will sometimes just send MIDI from the TR-8 that has a drum pattern programmed to a synth and see what happens. Sometimes its crap but more often than not I find something interesting.

You can use whatever gear you desire as long as the track fits in the general theme of this thread. Every submitter gets one track, which can be anywhere up to 20 minutes long (for those of you who want to try some extra droney/proggy/evolving/symphonic stuff, but I advise you to consider the listener's experience as well as your own creative vision if you decide to make a long track). Otherwise, there are no rules or limits for this mixtape challenge outside of "Don't do something that will get us in trouble."

Oh, also teams/collaborations count separately from individual submissions. So if you work with another goon on a track but you also like this one solo jam you made feel free to submit them both. BUT NO OTHER EXCEPTIONS ( this also gives me the idea to do a team challenge in the future.... )

:siren: The deadline shall be Valentine's Day- FEBRUARY 14, 2018 at 9AM, US EST. :siren:

Submissions received after the deadline will not be included in this mixtape and will have one letter grade deducted from their final score but could probably be included on a future one assuming there's no additional challenge criteria.

I shall post submission deets in the future. In any event, feel free to PM me about stuff.
