s in the news this morning. Apparently Marriott today set off major alarm bells in China for possibly violating cyber security/advertising laws and causing public outcry. Their offense? They had a questionnaire on their bookings app that accidentally listed Hong Kong, Tibet, Macau, and Taiwan as separate countries. Chinese netizens predictably lost their poo poo, and Marriott's website and app were shut down. An investigation is underway.

Would I be correct in assuming that "listing Chinese-claimed regions such as Tibet and Taiwan as separate countries" refers to a drop-down list that included those localities as well as other countries?

Edit: found this with regards to Taiwan's status: "If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck then maybe it's hurting the feelings of the Chinese people."

No. Koreans flip their loving poo poo about Dokdo way more, but Taiwan is an actual issue since people live there and it's a real place instead of a couple poo poo-covered rocks and the dispute is a real thing rather than just being a crazy figment of the collective han. The government/government-related people like to throw shitfits about Taiwan but I've never met an actual Chinese person who cares.

Do they care care or do they repost Wechat memes when they're going around? None of the border disputes here seem to have the same pure, incoherent rage that Dokdo elicits from Koreans.

I don't like quiz everyone I meet but every conversation I've had was:

Chinese Person: Do you think Taiwan is an independent country?
Me: Of course it is.
CP: Yeah, it's dumb.

Back when I lived with Chinese students one of them got shouting mad when I said Taiwan was an independent country. He was fresh off the boat at that point though, and in the following years mellowed hugely.

When I first started working at my university they got me an one of the other teachers to do a voice over for some marketing video. They'd already had a professional do one the year before but they wanted to change one tiny piece of useless information in it and didn't want to pay so much again so got us to do it. Even if I had a proper script, time to prepare and a year of acting lessons I'd still be completely loving terrible but we got shoved in a room and given a terrible Chinglish script which was handwritten badly so we struggled to even read it. They did one take and just said ok that's fine since they wanted to go to lunch. I've never bothered to try and find out what actually happened with it, I'd feel too embarrassed.

It would really help if they launched over the ocean rather than turn the country into an impact zone or use hydrazine. Haven't they figured out how to light a rocket without hypergolic propellent? The Russians solved that with a burning wooden stick, no joke.

Just lol if you think Oregon and Washington wouldn't take the opportunity to team up & fortify Oregon's southern border if given the opportunity to keep Californians contained. Colorado would probably help fund Nevada's wall.

The People’s Liberation Army has criticized its own military personnel for being paralyzed by peace as China ramps up preparations for war.

Loading...

This week, a PLA Daily report blasted its own soldiers for refusing to face the possibility of war, blaming the recent period of peace for paralyzing the current generation of troops, reported the Global Times, a newspaper produced by the ruling Communist party.

"War is not far from us. Regional situations around China are complex and unstable, and dangers are hiding under the peace. China cannot afford a military failure, so we must be fully aware of potential crisis and be prepared for battle at all times," the official PLA newspaper wrote.

On Thursday, President Xi Jinping called for the military to demonstrate heroism and a fighting spirit to safeguard the communist party’s interests at the second plenary session of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC, reported Xinhua News Agency.

That same day, the official military news site warned its soldiers to prepare for imminent threats and to avoid complacency as it begins intense training to ready the country for battle.

This follows the enormous military assembly on January 3 where President Xi Jinping told his troops not to fear “hardship or death” and issued instructions to its forces to begin real combat training for all three branches of the military - the army, the navy and the air force.

Since Xi’s speech, China’s most advanced military aircrafts have been conducting extreme exercises, according to the Global Times. These exercises, at home and abroad, have included air combat training with the J-20 stealth fighter jet, the Y-20 transport aircraft and the H-6K bomber.

Xu Guangyu, a retired general, says the likelihood that China will be forced to engage in military conflict has increased over the past few years.

"In regions like the Korea Peninsula, China-India border area and the Taiwan Straits, the PLA needs to be prepared for all possibilities. Our overseas interests in regions like Africa and the Middle East are also under threat due to local instability,” he said.
